SWLFDawg just took a trip there and will hopefully fill us in on the relevant details... But I thought I would chime in since I have not **** else to do today.
I actually lived in Iceland for a couple of years as a kid (4-6 years old.) My father was a Naval Aircrewman and we moved around a lot more than normal military families, but he never had to get on a boat for 6 months at a time so it was probably the best decision for the family. Most of the time we lived on a beach somewhere (Pensacola, Norfolk, Charleston, Bermuda Corpus... Etc.) But something came up where he had to make a decision on a long duty station and it was either 3-4 years in Australia or 2-3 years in Iceland. Well my mom didn't want to be gone from the US for any longer than necessary, so Iceland was the choice.
I don't have the best memories because I was so young, but basically all of my earliest memories are from Iceland. Everyone should have a chance to go see that beauty in person. Pictures and video would never do it justice.
Maybe its because of Iceland or I just hate sand in my *** crack... But my whole life I have been drawn to the mountains and lakes and could care less about the beach. My favorite memory of Iceland was being a bat boy on my Dad's softball team. It was called the midnight softball league because the games didn't start until 10:00 PM and ended at midnight, with no lights on the field. I legit learned to play ball in Iceland and never played t-ball or coach pitch (If they even had it back then) because by the time we got back to the states I was playing 7-8 yo little league.
I have actually landed in Reykjavik a few times on a plane as an adult during my time in the military, but I never left the airport so I didn't really get to see anything. I don't know how much of it is nostalgia of a kid's first memories vs it actually being as beautiful as I remember, but SWFL I would love it if you fill us in.. I would seriously like to take a trip back in a few years with the family if it makes sense. The hostel life doesn't sound like something I want to do with small kids.

A geyser and my aunt walking behind my dad carrying my little cousin while he was working a menthol. The Navy flew family out for free to see us back then and very little of my family took advantage sadly.

Anywho... It's fun to go down memory lane a little bit. Look forward to seeing what modern photography makes Iceland look like and how much it costs etc to take a trip.
