I might put Clemente first since he died in a plane crash that was taking food and supplies to a country hit by a natural disaster.

But Kobe had his daughter with him. Not that any daughter is "better" than the other but this was the one who was embodying his Mamba mentality and playing basketball. I could ALMOST bare it if she was still around to carry on his name and make it to college and maybe the pros. But they both were lost along with several other children/parents heading to a fun little weekend practice.

It really is tragic in so many different aspects.

Wasn’t self caused or old age. What he meant to the sport and to an entire generation of players and fans. How he had truly embraced his role as a father and was doing everything he could for his family and girls and was allll about them and content w his post NBA life as he should be. Even his kids podcast (the Punies) that was trying to use animated kid sports characters to teach life lessons and history etc.

I honestly think post NBA Kobe was going to be just as influential. Especially w Gigi coming up and him starting to spotlight and champion Women’s basketball and sports even more. She may have taken the women’s game to the next level of exposure due to already being a household name and recognizable name to ppl who typically wouldn’t care. Ppl would have tuned in to see what Kobe’s kid could do. She may have been the Kobe for a whole generation of little girls. That’s brushing over the obvious of how horrible losing a life that young at the age of 13 is.

The daughter is what made it even worse . I can’t even imagine those final moments knowing you can’t even save your daughter .

Reggie White, who at his death and maybe still, was the all time sack leader in NFL history and died young at 43 makes my top 5 along with:

1.Black Mamba-41
2. Clemente-38
3. The Iron Horse-37
4. Reggie White-43
5. Junior Seau-43

Like others have said losing Kobes daughter and the others in this travesty is far worse to think about.

As a father knowing what is about to happen and you cant do anything to protect your child has no comparison.

While on topic though as tough as it seems please dont forget the Iron Horse Lou Gehrig. His disease took him way to early and forced him out of the game at 36 died at 37 or 38. Goes down as one of the best hitters of all time 6 time champion. 7 consecutive allstars leading up to his death and would have been a 13 or 14 time all star if they had it the first half of his career.

Yeah, but he was still the most popular person in the sport at the time of his death.
Edit: Also happened on live tv.
Definitely Dale because millions were watching it on tv with Dale Jr. running 2nd right in front of his dad.
At the time NASCAR was the 2nd most watched sport behind the NFL.
The NBA is still going strong while NASCAR has been on its own journey to death since that day.
NASCAR has never and will never recover from the death of Dale Earnhardt.
I have never seen a sport so reliant on one person.
The NBA will continue going strong.

Death is part of life. Weighing one death over another is just odd.
So a 2 yr old that gets hit by a mac truck is the same as a 100 yr old man that dies in bed of natural causes.
Dont patronize me.

You guys are going to keep on and Im not going to be able to see any of your posts....

Im not patronizing anyone. If it's your loved one or your acquaintance or your idol you are going to value their life just as much as anyone else no matter what they did in their lives.

You didn't know who Sean Taylor is? You must be a young guy or didn't watch football when he played.
After I googled him I recognized him. I’ve seen his story on Forensic Files or something like that. He just wasn’t a household name.
We’re talking about Joe Montana, Brett Farve, Walter Payton, Barry Sanders, Tom Brady type figures.

Kobe was a factor of 10 more popular than Dale, and I grew up in Charlotte and respect NASCAR. Dale wasn't global.

Lou Gehrig was also who I think of, but that was like 80 years ago.

After the emotion wears off, the rape thing will bring Kobe down the list. He was a great basketball player and died too young, but the legacy will likely be tarnished as time passes

Earnhart not only died on live TV while on the field of his sport, he meant a lot more to Nascar than Kobe does to the NBA. Kobe's death is tragic and shocking no doubt but he's been retired for years.

Kobe's death has global impact considering basketball is the 2nd most popular sport on earth and hes one of the top 3 players to play....even being retired he was still extremely culturally relevant

Death is part of life. Weighing one death over another is just odd.
If we can weigh one life over another (and we do it all the time), and death is a part of life, then why shouldn’t we weigh one death over another? It’s all part of the same continuum.
