All I know is on NFL radio the scouts coming to the combine all rave about a steak house there. Best they have ever had. They are sincere. I don’t remember the name but I believe it’s close to the dome

St. Elmo's. I have not been there, however.

More info--Mrs. KG and I go out there often, as we are members and donors at the Indianapolis Zoo [long story that includes elephants and the fact that they are not tax-supported].

So, the zoo is good. Small, but good. It is under construction for the new chimp exhibit. It can be busy requiring off site parking with a shuttle. Mass Ave in the NE quad has a lot of bars, small shops and restaurants. The Eiteljorg Museum downtown is world renowned for Western and Native art. If they are still playing baseball, I like Victory Field. There is a decent art museum, and there is now a Kurt Vonnegut Museum--a family member of his designed the Athenium, where there's a great German restaurant, The Rathskeller. Away from downtown at the first ext N on 465 from that intersection with I-70 (east side) is Heidelberg Cafe. It's really kitschy, but they have a small kitchen and their bakery is amazing. Run by a real German baker.

If you’re into art, the art museum is decent. There’s a self-portrait of Rembrandt from when he was twenty, awesome. The Eitejorg Museum is first rate.

Indianapolis has many good restaurants & pubs. Below is an abbreviated list.
  • St Elmo's is probably the best. Have been fortunate to eat there several times. Excellent service and food. It is a little pricey. Reservations highly recommended!
  • There are a host of others -- Shula's, Ruth Chris, Harry & Izzy's (same owner as St Elmo, a Penn Stater), McCormick & Schmick's Seafood & Steaks, The Capitol Grill, Webber’s Grill (food prepared on big Webber Grills), Fogo de Chão Brazilian Steakhouse, and several others.
Italian Restaurants --

Have not eaten at any of these Italian restaurants because we always try to get a table at St Elmo’s or Harry & Izzy’s.

Don’t forget Indy Raceway.

If you have young children, people rave about their children’s museum. I took mine there and didn’t love it but I am an outlier on that.

I will second @PSU1969A and his recommendation on St. Elmo's. Yes, it's pricey. Yes, it's popular and sometimes difficult to get into. But yes, it's also worth it. But if you do go there, you have to get the shrimp cocktail. All I'll say about it is that if you have some nasal congestion when you walk in the door, you won't when you walk out the door after having it.

Indy also has a strong roster of craft breweries to choose from as well. So you could almost take a day to do a brewery crawl.

IMS is always an option and you can get a tour that will take you on a bus for a lap around the track.

Do you like architecture? Please request a tour of the Scottish Rite Cathedral... It is one of the most beautiful buildings in the country.

Here’s a unique idea. Take the family and pitch a tent 🏕️ at the entrance to the Speedway and camp there until next Memorial Day. I bet you make the Guinness Book of Records for the longest waiting time to watch an event in US History. Other than that, I’ve got nothing.

Have predinner cocktails in the 1933 Lounge then dinner at St Elmo’s. Have the Shrimp Cocktail and the famous sauce. Great wine selection to go with your steak. Have eaten there many times. Enjoy.

Forgive me but what is the best steak you ever had?
Not original poster, but I have eaten at many steakhouses and st Elmo’s is right up there. Bern in Tampa is excellent and a great dining experience (upstairs dessert room). Gibsons in Chicago and Mannys in Minneapolis are two of the best. Bavette in Chicago is very good, dimly lighted, speak easy feel. Chicago Cut is excellent, great views. Been a few years, but Giumarellos in Haddon Two, New Jersey is right at the top.

Del Friscos In Philadelphia is one of the best. Davios in king of Prussia was good. I would put Abe and Louie’s in Boston right up there. Nick and Sam’s in Dallas is awesome.

For Old school feel, The Drover in Omaha and the Tornado Room in Madison, Wisconsin are great.

been to Mastros in both Las Vegasand Scottsdale. Liked the Scottsdale location more. Hyde Park in Columbus, Ohio in the Short North is great. The Chop House in Ann Arbor is very good. Joseph,s in Iowa City is a nice place. Bowdies in Lansing is a top notch place.

Been to many Capital Grilles, Ruth Chris, and Morton’s. Cant go wrong most of the time.

Really want to get to a Jeff Rubys steakhouse and Peter Lugers in Brooklyn.

St. Elmo’s is the place you want to eat just because it’s the most talked about and you want to know what it was. I’ve eaten there a couple times, it’s not my favorite steakhouse (it was probably Jeff Ruby’s Waterfront before it floated away… Now it’s his steakhouse), but it’s good. As other said, you have to get the shrimp cocktail it is most known for, but DO NOT breathe in through your nose while you take a bite. It’ll blow your sinuses up. Get the old fashioned too, it’s really good.

As for other things to do, children’s museum is great, the Pirates AAA team is there and right next to the JW Marriott, there’s a small Medal of Honor memorial a couple blocks the other direction (it’s basically the names of all the recipients on etched glass), not sure what else, I’ve mostly been there on business.

Not sure what other people’s problem is, I think it’s a nice, walkable city.

Tour the Indy 500 museum that has every car that won the race and then take the bus ride around the track.
The War Memorial is in the city center and I consider it very impressive. You may have an opportunity to visit its museum.
Speaking of museums, I enjoyed the Indiana State Museum.
I visited Indy twice and enjoyed both visits.

If interested.. President Benjamin Harrison's home is pretty awesome!
I think it's newly renovated. Saw an article recently. Also James Whitcomb Reilly's house (he wrote the original "Lil' Orphan Annie" poem).
