Never had the pleasure. It's what kinda sucks about NJ. No In & Out, no Carl's Jr., not even a Hardees anymore.
That Hardees in the Busch Student Center was like my second freakin' home.

When I go to Vegas, standard practice to have the cab driver go through the In-N-Out drive-thru. The Carl’s Jr. burger with the onion ring on top is pretty good too.
As good as they are, and they are, they are not cheap and would rather go to so many local taverns who finally figured out that making a big fresh burger gets repeat biz. If anyone is in the New Hope / Washington Crossing area on Wednesdays go to Bowman's Tavern. Just $5 from 12 to 4pm and their toppings list is insane. And it feeds 2 people

Five Guys is solid, but In-N-Out is outstanding. They are the undisputed king of fast/casual burgers.
In & Out burger is good but way overrated IMHO... many parts of the country have burgers as good or better... California hype since they believe there everything is the best... had a guy tell us pizza was better in California ....ok if you say so.
I love the burgers at Arthur’s steak House and Grasshopper. Both have about four locations in Northern New Jersey , Irish pubs. Fat , juicy , 8 ounce burgers, instead of thin quarter pound, hockey pucks. Plus their potatoes are better than french fries, as they come roasted with onions and peppers
I go to California often and my relatives from there come here, we all agree that Five guys is just as good.
The absolute best burger I have ever tasted is at the Old Mill in Chester, NJ. They get their beef from a local farm , grass fed, and always fresh, never frozen. Yum

White Castle is overrated like in & out.
But don't tell that to the people that used to go to those places and live in a (name that burger joint) free area of country.
White Castle in your grocery's freezer is not the same after you nuke it for 60 seconds.
As for in&out, I'll just say it's top-notch and one of the better burger joints I've found.

Absolutely, you folks don't understand how hard it is to have a fast qsr and fresh ingredients with their pricing... They are the Chipotle of burger chains and Chipotle is charging $10 bucks for a burrito. You can get in n out for less than McDonald's right now near me at least.
Last June we are at Disneyland for a week (parks and a few day trips). My mom and daughter loved the burgers and fries so much that we had it 3 times. And yes, my mom was marveling about the price!
Define best, because for me it's a combo of quality,flavor, fresh ingredients and price... I've had better burgers (gourmet burgers) but the price point isn't worth the squeeze. Same for habit, five guys, Whataburger...have you seen in n out making fries by hand with fresh potatoes in restaurant?!? Are their better fries? Sure--- but you know they basically have non-nutrative food varnish on them right?!
That's fine, but in Cali a big Mac combo is 10.50, what's a big Mac in NJ these days? 7?
If I feel like a fast food burger here in AZ, I like In-N-Out and their prices are good. (About 7 bucks, plus tax, for TWO Double Double burgers which is my go-to if I'm really hungry).. My only beef is the lack of beef- their burger patties are relatively thin.
I like the food at Five Guys too, but sometimes I find it hard to justify paying over 8 bucks for a single fast food cheeseburger, or 12 bucks for a fast food cheeseburger and small fries, even though the portions of the meat and fries are larger than at In-N-Out.. (The price of a Double Double burger and fries at In-N-Out is about half that.)

Had In-N-Out on a trip out to San Diego last year - was expecting much better than I got based on the hype on this board (and from others), and really felt it was no better than Five Guys.
They're both fast food joints and I don't think that anyone is saying that either one is a great choice for frequent dining, healthy cuisine, or gourmet food, but many people that I know who aren't averse to eating a fast food burger once in a while feel that the food tastes (and is) a lot fresher at In-N-Out than at McDonalds...
Maybe I've just been lucky, but I've never gotten bad meat that smelled funky, or a stale or soggy bun, or soggy or dried out fries, or food that tastes like the top of the salt shaker fell off when they were salting my food, at In-N-Out.. I can't say the same for McDonalds. But McDonalds gets the edge when it comes to more selections and variety on the menu, shorter waits for food, and usually longer open hours of operation.
If Five Guys prices weren't double those of In-N-Out, I'd agree with you. I guess I could always eat 8 bucks worth of the free peanuts at Five Guys before my burger to make myself feel better about the higher prices..(smile)..

Five Guys is pretty good. The burgers are good, anyway. I don't much care for their limp, greasy fries.
The secret to In N Out is the burger sauce. If you don’t get extra of that and some to dip your fries in it’s not even worth it. Like going to Five Guys and ordering a hot dog

Whether you agree with me or not please understand that I post threads like this to try and stay human through the inhumanity of this virus .I know that a god damned fast food burger joint means nothing compared to what is going on now but it keeps me and hopefully some of you thinking about life instead of death. Or the stock market. Football and packed stadiuns and tailgating will return soon and hopefully all of us will be there to enjoy it. In the meantime let's fight about burgers.As I float around in the Sonoran desert it is keeping me sane. Somewhat.:Wink:
They're a cheaper (and smaller - 2oz patties vs 3.3oz) burger, sure. Really didn't feel they were a better burger, though. My reaction when we went was "that's it?"
Both places are a lot of hype. Above average fast food burgers, but hardly the religious experience so many make them out to be.
I haven't seen anyone counter the notion that there is only one burger-related religion.
The original Tumulty' s Pub cheeseburger platter with a 1/4 head of lettuce and dressing. Something like $ 5.95 in the late 60' s. Cost more for the napkins required to finish it.
I remember getting that burger when I was a kid. I always tried to pick it up to eat it, big mistake. That thing was awesome.
Like it a lot - but not my favorite (which is actually The Habit, which you can find in NJ). Restaurants are super clean, service can be a bit slow (but, that's because they really are making it fresh)... people who work at I-N-O are super customer focused... Certainly part of the culture in So.Cal...
Cost $5.95 in the late 60s? Holy moly.... that'd be over $40 adjusted for inflation.
