OT: Issues with shocks on an '08 Chevy Tahoe.

I have a 2008 Chevy Tahoe 2WD, and my front shocks have gone out. The dealership is telling me it will cost approximately $600 to replace EACH shock. They also say that you can only put these GM shocks on there, or you will receive error messages and you ABS and other handling functions will not operate properly. That's 17'in ridiculous, and I refuse to pay that. I have found the following website:

Do any of you have experience with this issue or have used this website? GM is fully scamming people with these overpriced parts.

$600 per wheel is high. The installation is pretty straight forward and nothing too complicated. Front wheels can be a ***** if you don't have a lift. Seems the $600 per shock quote is pretty standard for Chevy dealers. I have a Z71 and was quoted $600 per shock too for Bilstein. Bought them online for around $75 per shock. If you have autoride you're looking at $200-300 per shock depending on brand. Still high but not $600

I don't have my manual handy to read and see if it explains it. I've been told they're autoride shocks, but no one's mentioned self-leveling.

The latest dealer said the shock was around $465, labor is $90/hour, and the taxes would bring it up to approximately $600. The dealership was saying my only option was to put GM's shock on there, or have error messages on the dash and lose some handling functionality.

I was going to suggest the Rancho RS5000 if he didn't have the auto ride. I just replaced my front two on my 05 2500HD but sinced mine is leveled I went with the Rancho MT7000. Anything from the dealer is going to be higher. Best thing he can do is find somewhere like Rick's Pro Truck if he doesn't live in Jackson and see what they can do. It will be cheaper than the dealer.

that is why it is so high. Find a truck accessory shop in your area they should be able to find you some cheaper. You don't have to have the GM shocks just the right replacements.

To get a price for the shocks. I'm assuming they are AC Delco or some other GM supplier brand like Delphi. The shocks will be cheaper on there and you can just have dealer install if that is what you want.


I haven't found where to get parts any cheaper other than eBay stuff. I buy basic parts from the site all the time for the hot rod and it has been spot on so far.

you may be stuck with it. I know they don't pass up making a buck but if they are telling you GM parts only then you will have to go with GM parts only. How many miles do you have on your Tahoe. I replaced my front shocks on a diesel 4x4 with 104,000 miles because I went with new tires and a leveling kit. They weren't wore out. Is there something causing your front shocks to wear out? 4 years on an air bag system doesn't sound good.

The shock started making a terrible squeaking/whining noise probably around 95k miles, and I've been riding on it since then, trying to avoid a GM *** raping. I did find a Monroe conversion kit that will allow me to put standard shocks on there and bypass error codes from the electronic system, so I'll probably go that route.

I appreciate all of the help.
