1 week from today Texas Monthly reveals the newest list of the Top 50 BBQ joints in Texas. Which means every other BBQ joint not in Texas is fighting for #51 at best.***

They only publish a new list every 4 years. The previous top 10 from 2021was as follows:

#1 Goldees
#2 Interstellar
#3 Truth
#4 Burnt Bean
#5 LeRoy and Lewis
#6 Cattleack
#7 Franklin
#8 Evie Mae's
#9 Snow's
#10 Panther City

I have been lucky enough to visit 7 of those 10 fine establishments. Interstellar and LeRoy Lewis both recently received Michelin Stars. Truth is probably the most upscale yet authentic tasting BBQ dining experience of my life and the lines are massive for good reason. Franklin, Cattleack, and Snow's are legendary. Goldee's took over the BBQ world 5 years ago. These places are the best of the best.

Not sure who's staying on the list, but I am certain several will topple out. I will be disappointed if Bar A BBQ doesn't crack the top 10. I recently ate there and it's probably the best BBQ I have had in my life.

Any of you been to any potential new top 10 joints? Do Franklin and Snow's finally fall off the list after a decade plus of domination?

And 17 you Bucees. With your nasty áss reheated brisket and imposter kolaches and klobasniks.

Brantley Creek BBQ in Odessa may creep into the top 50.

Can I get odds on la Barbecue at least being top 10? It's a lesbian couple on Cesar Chavez in Austin that makes great barbecue.
Actually, LeAnn Mueller died recently. Her wife was her business partner, but LeAnn was BBQ royalty. Her grandfather, father, and brother had run Louie Mueller's just outside of Austin for about 75 years until Johns recent death.

Louie Mueller's is where I ate nearly 20 years ago and finally decided Texas BBQ was better than all others. Daniel Vaughn of Texas monthly had a similar experience.

Anyhow, with LeAnn gone, I would assume Ka Barbecue is not the same.

He's still around, but I don't think he'll survive the summer. Dead man walking. Every time I look at him I see that mother17er slinking out of the hotel room at 5:45 am asking "Whaaat's gooooing on?... Whaaat's a call guuurl? That's reeeaaallly a thing in big cities?" In what I can only describe as a Scooby Doo esque voice. And it makes want to smash his face in with ball peen hammer.

I think I have his replacement starting in mid June.

Ten 50 is a tourist trap. Its meh at best. Same as Hard Eight. Wouldn't make the top 200.

I know you travel to that part of DFW a lot based on your previous comments of enjoying Liberty Burger. Do yourself a favor and hit the following spots nearby instead. These are the non tourist traps where locals go. If you're customers/coworkers haven't taken you than they are either losers or trying to rip you off.

Burgers - Skip Liberty and go see Jeff at Ye Old Butcher Shop

BBQ - Skip Ten 50 and drive up to McKinney and hit Hutchins

I've had Hutchins. It's good. I like Ten 50 better though. The banana pudding is outstanding. Biggest gripe is that I can't get a draft beer there.

They have Goldie's misspelled. ( If it refers to the one in Vicksburg before it moved.) Yeah I know they're talking about some joint in Texas. It its day it would be hard to beat Goldie's for BBQ pork sandwich.

Hutchins is solid.

Had to hit Cooper's down in Llano on a trip back from Fredericksburg just so I could keep checking the box on Josh Abbott's song You Ain't Met My Texas Yet.

Have you tried Hurtado BBQ yet? They have a satellite location at Globe Life Field but lines have always been way too long for me to try.

Brandon Hurtado has a BBQ book out called Barbacoa that supposed to be pretty good. Like his restaurant it focuses on Tex-Mex BBQ....and 17 those salty Bucees brisket sandwiches.

It's a club sport. No one outside of Texas eats at these places*** I ate at Terry Black's in December and liked it. Leroy and Lewis is on the list next time I'm in Austin. I'm a simple guy. I'm typically fine with good pulled pork and some sides when I eat BBQ.

Midland TX has a new arrival, big changes up top. MMC Half Acre only made my top 3 list in the Midland/Odessa area, ate there once and that was enough. I lived a 1/2 mile from it for 3 months and didn't even bother to try it a second time.

Man. They didn't even bother trimming that brisket before or after the cook. Look at all that unrendered fat on that slice near the edge of the box. I remember DMing you a few years ago wanting to meet up when I was passing through to try .5 acre. Glad I dodged the bullet.

Not super stoked about the list. By all accounts Burnt Bean is deserving and I am somewhat friends with the folks at LeRoy and Lewis. But even they thought Mums in Austin and Bar A would make the top 10. I think Goldee's, Evie Mae's and Truth are all behind Bar A.

I'm getting mixed reviews on the Midland Foodies FB page, people are saying that's not MMC so I posted the receipt. Others are coming in saying it's trash.

Are you the same idiot that tried to bust my balls about my racist remarks when I described the HGI security guard and hotel manager as Indian? Seriously, if you are uncomfortable with the proper nouns people use themselves to describe their cultural background, you need to work on that.

Please see the Instagram post below from La Barbecue shortly before the founder passed away where they of course express pride in being a successful lesbian owned BBQ joint...

1000019121.png

Redbird BBQ in Port Neches came in #4 and is owned by a 2nd generation Iranian. Brisket and Rice made the top 50 (could have been top 10 IMO) and it's owned by a pair of Vietnamese bros. Does that offend your sensibilities as well? Because all its really doing is describing the culture of the restaurant owners, which is material fact in the flavors and experiences you'll enjoy when eating their food.

La Barbecue is so good and was groundbreaking because they did things different... Because they are/were different than all the other BBQ joints. You seem to be the only one that has a problem with that fact. You should really work on that, it's 2025 and lesbian isn't a bad word anymore.

I live 3 miles from Goldee’s. Maybe they’ll tank so there won’t be 5-hour lines to get in anymore.

They make good stuff, but not wait-in-line-5-hours stuff. Nobody does, for me.

At that point, you're probably there more for the cult BBQ experience and to be seen as cool among that tribe than for the food.

I like BBQ. I don't like cults much.

They and Ten 50 do a good job with the experience. Definitely not bad BBQ with either. But it's the next step down from the top joints.

If you're looking for the best experience in Texas BBQ, I'd go check out The Salt Lick out in Dripping Springs near Austin. Like Hard 8, the food is good, but maybe not Top 50 level, but an amazing place to eat just the same.

I don't wait in line for anybody's food either, UNLESS, there's a spot open at the bar and I can sit there and they keep the beer coming....

I'd rather eat some Lee's pork rinds from the truck stop than wait in line at a restaurant more than 15 minutes. If a bbq place or whatever is mega popular, I'll go at off-peak times. If it's a place like Goldee's that always has a wait - welp, I bet it's real tasty but I won't know.

I wouldn't mind going on a TX BBQ pilgrimage kind of thing, but it would have to be the kinds of places the locals go to, not the wildly popular ones you see on this list or on tv.

I have done it at a few places. Goldee's, Franklin's, Snow's. Cattleack as well, but back then it was just a normal North Dallas lunch line situation. I remember waiting for 30-45 minutes in the lunch line at Smith's in Tupelo back in 1995 or so for a meat, two sides, a roll and a sweet tea for $3.80. And you couldn't even

The "wait in line" places I have gone, it's more comparable to a football tailgate than waiting in line. Its always be a few buddies and we brought chairs, coolers full of beer, and usually some good tunes. Looking back at time stamped photos, we rolled up to Goldee's on a Friday morning in June of 2023 at 10:36 am and were eating at 11:53 am. Not that big of a deal really. I've sat in the 17ing lobby at TRH on a Tuesday night for longer... Tell him @PK Dawg
