I say yes but I think there is going to be a big effort to combine all the losers
behind Lumumba. I think it is going get down and dirty.

I think more of Harvey's voters will vote for Lee than for Lumumba. I also think Lumumba's ward really turned out for him, but I don't see him gaining a lot of support from the other wards (though I didn't see the returns).

/I hope

The Chicago racist spent nothing in the primary and garnered nearly 1/4 of the votes cast. He has a war chest with which to attack lee as the white man's lacquey. Mr lee is about to experience some Chicago style politics. Will it work? I suspect it will.

That's going to be a very interesting, and important, runoff election. Lee got 10% more than Lumumba, but there are still another 40% that went for other candidates. I suspect most of those that vote in the runoff will go to Lumumba. Still cautiously optimistic that Lee will win, but I think it'll be close. This could be the best thing that's happened for Jackson since Ditto was voted out or the worst disaster ever. And it will affect all of us in the metro area either way.

Interesting, I have never seen that and I agree it is hard to imagine any right

minded tax paying citizen could cast a vote for a person with that position.

I think you are correct. I remember when Johnson won last time, the other candidate (forgot his name) from South Jackson was supported by voters in Northeast Jackson, but lost by a significant margin. I would be surprised if there wasn't a similar result this time with Lumumba the winner.

Wow, I didn't realize that organization was still out there. So if he wins is

Jackson going to secede from the Union and the State?

You're thinking of Marshand Crisler, but he didn't have the support that Lee has, as Crisler got just below 27 percent of the vote. Lumumba ran for Ward 2 Councilman that year as well and won in the runoff-- receiving just under 42 percent of the vote in the primary and just over 60 percent in the runoff.

May 5, 2009 Democratic Primary:
Dorothy "Dot" Benford (DEM) 99 0.293%
Marshand K Crisler (DEM) 9097 26.914%
Eddie J Fair (DEM) 1268 3.751%
John Horhn (DEM) 5922 17.521%
Harvey Johnson (DEM) 9380 27.751%
Robert L Johnson (DEM) 1380 4.083%
John H Jones Jr (DEM) 169 0.500%
Frank Melton (DEM) 6151 18.198%
Brenda R Scott (DEM) 288 0.852%
Jabari A Toins (DEM) 46 0.136%

COUNCIL MEMBER - WARD 2
Donald Beard (DEM) 441 7.240%
Clarence Bolls Sr. (DEM) 246 4.039%
Wydett U Hawkins (DEM) 1133 18.601%
Chokwe Lumumba (DEM) 2539 41.684%
Vance "Sigg" Siggers (DEM) 314 5.155%
Tom Stingley (DEM) 822 13.495%
Stacey Webb (DEM) 323 5.303%
Verna L White (DEM) 273 4.482%

May 19, 2009 Runoff:
Marshand K Crisler (DEM) 12308 36.993%
Harvey Johnson (DEM) 20963 63.007%

COUNCIL MEMBER - WARD 2
Wydett U Hawkins (DEM) 2474 39.364%

And that is the problem. Not many of those left in Jackson. Unfortunately, the representative republic that we are is working perfectly. Jackson leadership reflects its population. I doubt that our founding fathers envisioned that we could ever get to having people who don't pay taxes, don't work, don't even own their own piece of the good ole US of A and practically hate it vote themselves entitlements while sending the country into a financial tailspin, all the while being completely incompetent to even understand the economics of what they are doing. I don't know what the answer is, but just turning 18 and having no other redeeming qualities makes you question if that is all that should be necessary to vote.

It's crazy, but historically, most "empires" lasted about 200 years. Everything post 1976 is gravy for us! I kid...but only a little...

Interesting. I graduated high school with Johnathan, had no clue he had gotten himself into the political realm. Dude is a super great guy, very smart & a very big Dawg fan. Him winning would be the best thing to happen to Jackson since Kiefer's was built.

I agree with you, but don't get your hopes up. Nothing surprises me about Jackson any more.

Unfortunately I think a Lee/Lumumba runoff is the worst scenario for Lee.

The Race goes from being a referendum on Harvey Johnson and the state of Jackson to being a referendum on Race. And yes the irony is that they are both African American. My gut tells me Lumumba wins pretty handily.

And if Chokwe wins I really don't have positive views on what will happen in Jackson. I see an acceleration of major businesses/services moving out not to mention population. (full disclosure I now live in Madison, the county not the city)

Agree, Shmuley said it earlier, you know Chokwe is gonna play the race card

especially if he isn't polling well over the next several days. We can only hope
it somehow backfires on him but I'm starting to think it won't.

I think one of the political consulting firms in the metro area need to take advantage of this. Conservative firms could help from behind the scenes to take down Lumumba. Lee winning is a must.

May as well... Lee is already being accused of getting stealth Republican help

Which of course is part of the game to paint him as being non-Black.

You sound like the kind of guy who would just give up and move to Madison. This may be an old joke, but it's Jonathan Lee or For Sale for me. I bought a house in Hinds County in August, and will put that mother right back on the market before I live in a town for which he is the mayor. I know that sounds cliche, but it's a lot easier to move to Madison County than Canada.

This election is exhibit "A" for MSU not making any future commitments to hold sporting events in our beloved capital. The fact that Lumumba even has a legitimate chance to be mayor is a testimony to the volatility of the place. If Lumumba doesn`t get elected this time at some point someone of his ilk will. It is another Detroit waiting to happen. I know a number of you passionately defend the place and I`m happy that you are happy with your home but if I were you I would be at least be thinking about an exit strategy.

Yep, people need to do a little Google searching to find out what this guy is all about. He scares the **** out of a lot of African Americans too.

I believe this is one of the most important local elections in decades. There were some positives from the city council races. If Lee can somehow win, it will be the best leadership the city has seen in a long time. If he doesn't, I am probably gone as well and I am one of the more ardent supporters of the Bold New City.

Jackson will be fine. That said, Voter turnout has to/will favor Lee in this run-off. Spread the word to vote for Lee (doesn't matter if you voted yesterday, you are able to vote).

So let me get this straight, are you chastising someone for being the kind of guy that would just give up, yet you are doing the same if someone wins an election. Ted Cruz approves this message.

im actually the kind of guy who grew up in clinton and when i moved back to ms realized that madisons finest asset was having ridgeland between it and jackson. im certainly not the kind of guy who would buy a house in hinds county in 2012. besides the semi joking paranoia, what about the post did you not agree with? gentrify on my man, gentrify on...

also, ive never lived in jackson so i couldnt have "given up" on anything, although im at a loss as to what that would be

I'm hopeful that if Jonathan Lee wins....

that we can start working on this attitude that what happens to Jackson doesn't affect the entire metro area and state as a whole. A vibrant and viable capital city is critical for Madison County, Rankin County, and the state as a whole.
