Ughh...my son went down at BMX practice and is out for 8 weeks. He will miss the state and northeast regional championships, and he holds the #1 ranking in both.

Now I have a six year old with a fractured elbow who can't do anything he likes to do. No riding, no fall baseball, can't even play catch or go the playground. Not even recess or gym. :(

I know it's part of growing up and not the biggest deal but I feel really bad for him. He's despondent and sad. He feels like his dreams have been crushed. And I need some activities he can do besides watch TV. Anyone been through this?

Is his arm immobilized? Or can he use the hand to build things, even awkwardly?

We tried Legos today and it was sort of a disaster. I'm hoping he'll get the hang of using the fingers on the cast hand after a while. It's his right (strong) hand too.

I was going to ask if it was his dominant hand. And Legos was one of the things I was going to suggest.

Does he have any trains?

What is a 6 year olds BMX race like? My 5 year old rides like a bat out of hell and loves anything involving racing or tag. Is it really competitive? I imagine even the best don’t go fast enough to do more than roll over the bigger jumps

My kids are really into board games which you can certainly do with a busted wing. We all play real monopoly together and they’re learning chess (no stress chess is a great learning tool, $15 bucks on Amazon)

A train set is a cool idea. He's never really had one.
Little boys and trains are ubiquitous. My 2 grew up with them. Here they are at 5 and 7 with their Christmas gifts:

If you want to go that way, head down to the Train Station in Mountain Lakes, Exit 42 off of 287 South.

And the track available today (FasTrack) can be set up on the floor or on carpet, can be stepped on, is extremely sturdy, and can be pulled apart easily to make new layouts. Way, way better than what I had as a kid. We used to set up huge wandering layouts all over the living room, running behind the bar, around the sofa, etc. My wife loved that.

No idea what it's like now (BMX has changed a lot. Hell, I'm not even sure if they still race, or if they just do mostly tricks now), but I raced from 6-12 or so. It was competitive, even at that age, with state and national rankings. I even got to compete in the national championship at 8, and while I was top 2 in NJ, I got smoked.

It was great fun, and I highly recommend it.

It's really fun! If you live anywhere near Howell, Flemington, or Egg Harbor you should try it out. The smaller kids don't do a lot of jumping, then again nobody really does but the pros because it slows you down unless you so it right. They can be pretty fast though! Here's the main event for 6 intermediate from the Garden State Nationals. (yes it's my boy out front :D)
