I have a fence lined with Cleyera. I want to have jasmine throughout the bed just to have a worry free flower bed. <div>
</div><div>Whats the best way to go about this? I have a few flats of jasmine, but don't know what to do about the weeds. Do you dig them up? Last year I attempted this using round up then planting some jasmine, but the weeds came back and choked out the jasmine. </div><div>

You need to roundup (or any non-selective herbicide) now to kill the weeds. Wait a day or so before you plant the jasmine. The Roundup will not hurt the jasmine if you don't spray it directly on it. It is absorbed through the leaf of the plant (not the root) and shuts down the plants ability to feed itself. After you get sufficient kill of the weeds (around 1-2 weeks), you need to put about 2-3 inches of mulch to cut down on re-germinating weeds. Don't mulch until the weeds are dying. Then, later in spring/summer, you need to spray any grass that may creep in with a product that is designed to be sprayed over ornamentals that will kill the grass but not harm the jasmine or cleyera. Spot spray any broadleaf weeds that come back this summer and fertilize and water your jasmine. Next spring, spray the broadleafs that come back and continue pampering the jasmine and before long, you will have sufficient cover by the jasmine to keep most weeds out. <div>
</div><div>Edited to add: After looking at your pictures again, you need to make the whole thing a bed from the fence back to about 18-24 inches on the other side of your cleyera. All this needs to be sprayed and mulched. You can't just spray a small area with roundup and then plant your jasmine. You need to spray the whole thing and mulch the whole thing.</div>

I don't think jasmine will do well here, unless you really alter the landscape. Jasmine really does well in two areas hillsides and shaded areas.Correct meifI am wrong butit looks as though your yard slants toward the fence and then away from the person taking the picture. Sort of like a drainage easement-Thisis one reason the weeds are more prominant in that area. Fresh water is constantly bringingin/carrying new weed seed. However, if you intend on making it a flower bed I agree with dawgnautique suggestions.I might also suggest building the bed up and edging it with something like stone, possibly even building a faux rock creekin front to help with water flow. Another thingI would suggest is a post-emergent over the entire yard to kill your winter weeds, and this coming fall and next spring apply a pre-emergent(weed preventative) to prevent any new weeds. Hope this helps

I'm gonna give it a shot, but yes it does slope towards the fence. I already have the jasmine so what the hell.
