Conan and Letterman were the only ones since Carson worth a damn.

I mean everyone has a celebrity podcast now, so late night talk shows don’t really have much cultural relevance. Also Colbert leaned way too hard into the political, turning off a large part of his potential audience base - old people who still watch live tv.

Sports (or live events) are really the only things that make sense for live tv going forward.

He needed to be first. Even before they all became political, Kimmel was not good television.
Kimmel was awesome... Back when I too was awesome. At least I have the common decency to be a sniffling gimp in the privacy of my own home and not on national television. But there was a time when Kimmel was to be respected... But that time along with a time where men wore whitey tighties has passed.

Long live the juggies. And RIP fat Jimmy Kimmel.

The comments about the Trump settlement with CBS are being used as the reason why. It might have just been the final nail in the coffin because late night tv ratings have been in a death spiral for several years now. Kimmel and Fallon may not be far behind.

No doubt broadcast TV viewing has declined, but some of it is self induced. Carson made fun of both sides of the aisle whereas so many of these shows only find “humor” in people in the other political party. You have at that point immediately turned off half your potential audience. SNL went down that path as well which is sad because there was a ton of material at their disposal that would have been used if all they were really trying to do was entertain.

Once these shows became political it was over. The vaccine syringe dance remains the cringiest thing I’ve ever seen on tv and I watched Flavor of Love & Jersey Shore. Letterman was great.
I don’t know. Colbert was pretty funny when basically all he did was act as a caricature of Bill o’reilly and make fun of the right for 99% of the show. Different type of show so not apples to apples, but I think it’s more that the late night hosts thought being political was an acceptable substitute for being funny. Which it is for some viewers, but not enough of them and they're all going after the same small pool on the left while Greg gutfield gets those on the right to himself.

Seems unlikely, but could local news make a bit of a comeback if the late shows go away?

I like political jokes if they are funny. I don't care if they are made about either party. I take it for what it is "fun" but these guys are going way past making fun of a politicians. They are attacking the voters. They come off as just plain hate not funny. That is stupid to go after 1/2 of the country. That's a lot of loss ratings. That's like owning a store and you giving the middle finger to every other person who walks in. Plain Stupid. The man show was one of the funniest shows on TV back in the 90's. What happened to Kimmel? I think a lot of these guys are going to change in fear of losing thier job. two guys who are funny are John Stewart and Greg Gutfeld, but they are cable.

Selling peace on TV is not profitable. So, if you are not upsetting someone, you are going out of business.

Same is true with politics.

There is a reason it is called the idiot box.

Just saw that Fox is comparing the "late night" shows, and all are down in viewers except "Gutfeld!"

There's only one problem with that - "Gutfeld!" is not late night. It comes on at 9 Central, 10 Eastern and that's prime time, not late. The programs don't even overlap in times on the air. They're not direct competitors.

It’s not political jokes that are the problem. The problem is when the host is literally in tears crying because he’s upset that his candidate lost the election. Looking at you, Kimmel. Get over yourself. The party in the White House has flip flopped six times since the early 90’s. I think you’ll be ok, mister millionaire comedy show host.

Da17 is 'Gutfeld'?
I am not even googling that. If I have never even heard of a show or a person( "not sure which this is) despite all of the random content that is pushed to me on multiple platforms, I am confident the show lacks wide scale relevance.

this claim sounds like one of those times where the claim of 50% growth is made and while that is mathematically correct, going from two viewers to three viewers just isn’t impressive.

I have not watched late night in decades.
what I do remember is that opening monologue jokes and bits were very political even back in the 90s.

Local news, which has historically been on nightly before the late shows air, will make a bit of a comeback due to a late show ending?

I don't follow the connection you seem to see.
So my answer is that no, local news will not make a bit of a comeback due to a late show ending. If local news makes a bit of a comeback in the coming few years, it will be for other reasons.

Nominating this for “least surprising post of the year”.
