Next door neighbor in OR was a math major (ABD for Ph.d from Nebraska).

What is 111,111,111 ^2 = ?

Interesting result.

11^2 =121
111^2 = 12321
1111^2 =1234321
11111^2 = 123454321
etc

Since when did math problems start having questions marks in the equations?

I took Calc @ Rutgers.

I read the book the night before midterm / final.

Got something like a D+ on one / a D- on the other.

Thought I passed. But received a F.

When I asked the professor why I (a solid D student) didn't pass the course, he told me that I had recorded 14 consecutive Zero's on pop quizzes (held Friday afternoons). In those days i was dating a busty blonde from Verona and had cut 14 Friday afternoon Calc labs to date Ricki: 38-23-36...Christ she was hot (definitely worth the "F"!).~

Anyway so much for numbers ... I'm more of a stat guy (see paragraph above).

BTW do you like ...... better ?

IMO All math asks questions...and sometimes we get the right answer!

Here's an interesting series of three videos by the same person. Once you get past the very fast talking, and if you can make it through them, it's pretty neat stuff -- stuff you may know, already, but just a fun way to remember some of it, and maybe more interesting to the younger crowd that is used to fast talking and imagery.

I had a logic class that I got A's on the midterm and final. Knew the content cold. Got a B in the class because of never having shown up for a Friday recitation.. which, really, I could have taught. So I go looking for the Prof same day grades are out.. he was already on the other side of the world.. or so they said. Never was told recitation was mandatory.. what is it 30 years later.. still bugs me.

Your result was illogical , Jim.

Mine on the other hand (38-23-36) is very predictable!~

Interesting video.

Question: can you explain why he OFFSET the sequence by 1 digit in the S2 equation? What if he lined it up under the first digit...would he still have obtained the -1/12

Just wondering.

Thanks

This is a hard question to answer because the whole thing is nonsense from a math viewpoint. The first thing he does is say that
1-1+1-1+.... = 1/2. This is nonsense. From a mathematical point of view, this sum diverges; it does not exist in any meaningful way. The guy in the video even proves this. For an infinite sum to exist, the sequence of the partial sums needs to limit to a number. (The 3rd partial sum is simply the sum of the first three terms. The k'th partial sum is the sum of the first k terms). Here the partial sums are either 0 or 1 and they alternate; they never get close to a single number so the infinite sum does not exist. Once you start with the nonsensical claim that this sum is 1/2 you can "prove" anything.

This video is misrepresenting something that is used in physics and mathematics called the (Euler) Zeta Function. There are a few strange examples of times where making this misrepresentation actually does allow the theory to match the experiments.
