does Miss still have alcohol content restrictions on beer? can you buy the type of beer in Miss I'm enjoying right now called Resin? a beer with 9.1% alcohol content? I went by the liquor store here in Tex and there are lots of beers with alcohol contents of 8, 9, and 10%...

just wonderin'

10% is the cap now. Started slow but quite a few good beers have found their way here. Still waiting on Stone Brewery.

I'm about to try this one out after I finish some Andygator. http://beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/22/3635

You gotta drink some water when drinking a few high gravity brews. Nasty hangovers off what seems to be fairly little quantities of beer.

There's plenty on this list:
Top 250 Beers
It's mainly stronger double bocks, IPA's, aged porters and the like.
I recommend one of the barrel-aged stouts if you're new to the strong beers (instead of one of the really hoppy strong IPA's).

18% is the highest....

I have personally seen. It was Dogfish Head 120 minute IPA. It can be hard to find in states with a lot less restrictions than MS though. You could only buy it one bottle at a time or 4 ounces at time on tap in Kentucky.

There are a lot of quality >10% ABV beers available. Like others mentioned most are IPAs, double bocks, and stouts. If you learn to love hops, you will have a lot more high ABV beers to choose from.

My 1st "go to" high ABV beer that is available in many supermarkets around the South was Sam Adams Double Bock. It is >9% ABV and sells in a four pack. Not my favorite high ABV beer, but it is one I can readily find and it is drinkable.

I have tried making a couple of ...

Imperial IPAs but have better luck with the ones with 6-7% ABV.

There are some really good Imperial or Double IPAs out there but if you don't like hoppy, strong beer in the 8-10% ABV with some elevated IBUs, then these are NOT for you.

I would recommend ...

Lagunitas Hop Stoopid (Calif) - 8% ABV, ~ 100 IBU
Hercules Double IPA (Denver) - 10% ABV, ~ 85 IBU
Ruination IPA (Calif - best beer Stone makes 'cause I like good 'hoppy' beer) - 8% ABV, ~95 IBU
Double Trouble (Mich - again, best beer Founder's makes; or, at least tied with Founder's Oatmeal Breakfast Stout) - 10% ABV, ~85 IBU
90 Minute Imperial IPA (Del - to me, this beer is really inconsistant; one good, next not so good) - 9% ABV, ~90 IBU

ABV = Alcohol by Volume
IBU = International Bittering Units - measure of bitterness

Love Dogfish Head. Their 90 minute IPA is my personal fave. I think it's around 10%. I've never seen it west of Georgia though.

Big fan of DogFish Head as well, but I don't usually get beyond the 60 and 90 minute. Not a huge IPA fan, but I can handle those two. They're very popular in the NE, and their darker stuff is good as well. The brewery is in Delaware.

Raider ...

I tried the Dogfish Head 120 Minute IPA but didn't care for it too much. Dogfish Head made their 'name' with IPAs and a huge number of folks have learned to enjoy IPAs because of them. I give them a lot of credit for that but lately, they have really put out some 'edgy' brews.

Tried the Noble Rot (yes, that is the real name), half beer & half wine, and did not care for it. Couple of years ago they came out with Sha Tea (sp?) that was part beer, part gin and the rest was tea. They even tried an 'upscale' malt liquor a couple of years ago if I remember correctly.

They make really good 60, 90 minute IPAs, Shelter & Lawnmower Pale Ales but I don't care for many of their other 'experiments.'

Most of the 10% stuff I've had have been Imperial Stouts. Narwhal made by Sierra Nevada is one of my favorites.

I found out recently that a lot of the big beers can be aged like wine. I'm considering throwing a couple of 4 packs of Bigfoot in the bottom of my fridge and forgetting about them until 2014.

I tried Chimay once in a hotel waiting to go out to eat. It was not the Grand Reserve Blue Top, but it was a large bottle with a champagne cork. I had 2 waiting for 45 minutes (on an empty stomach) and when I eventually stood up, I realized I was clearly getting drunk. On two beers. No wonder-- later realized it was around 10% alcohol and the damn bottle was 25 oz... About a six pack of what I usually drink. Worth it though. Any one had the Blue?

Yeah, Chimay blue is my favorite beer in the world.

It is best had in a glass. The smell enhances the flavor. It is also best after it warms up a little bit...not warm, just not right-out-of-the-fridge-cold.

Yeah, one of those tall bottles is enough for me for a while.

I have experienced what they said was the top tier, I guess it was the Blue. I

thought it was pretty tasty and it did pack a punch.

A couple of weeks back I had a small party. Bought a pack of the blue, a pack of the red and the three pack with the official Chimay glass. I drank all 11, plus a Highland Gaelic Ale, and was told I also drank a smokey porter. It's been a long time since I was that drunk. The next day I don't think I ever moved from the couch.

A man after my own heart. This was my first beer of choice in my formative years, especially loved the 7 oz bottles for chunking at road signs. I try alot of different beers and just don't lika an IPA, I love most lagers and Belgiam style beers but just cant develope a taste for IPA's. Dos Equis is my beer of choice now and have recently devoloped an affinity for regular Coors.

Just because its high gravity doesn't make it drinkable. I got some "Timber Beast" by Lazy Magnolia that is 9% and its the worst tasting **** I have ever drank. I was still burping up yeast the day after drinking just one

If you don't like beers with hops...

you definitely won't like Timber Beast or a lot of IPAs. I love IPAs and cannot stand hefes.

Weird ...

So am I, but I was told a couple of weeks ago that they will have no interest in coming here until the 10% cap is lifted.

Because vast majority of Stone Beer is < 10% ABV. Only popular Stone brew > 10% that I can think of is Double Bastard Ale and It's like ~11% ABV or so. But their best beer ... Pale ale, Ruination IPA, IPA, Arrogant Bastard, Smoked Porter & Levitation ... are all < 10%

Also, North Carolina changed their beer restriction of 6% ABV not too long ago and they are quickly moving out on the craft beer front. Ashville is becoming a beer city. They are adding two major breweries. Hope Miss'ippi moves in that direction.

I feel that way about Andygator. Andygator drinkers need to try Duvell...when and if it arrives in MS.

is good, but not my favorite. My personal favorites are Hop Notch IPA by Unita (~7.8% ABV),Bell's Two Hearted, Hoptimus Prime, and the Bitter ***** Imperial IPA (9.5% - 10% ABV). Then again, I am a hop head. In my home brewing, I have a black IPA & Copper Ale in secondary fermenters right now plus Cascade Mountains West Coast IPA in bottles.

The best advice I could give anyone is to go somewhere with a lot of beers on tap and order flights. Try a bit of everything until you find what you like best.

You entrepreneurs need to open a beer store in Drankin Co

There is no good place in all of Rankin Co to buy beer. I think a Hobs & Habannas type place (larger, really) would be booming.

That's a helluva rec. I may order some online--even though it's $12.95 a bottle. I have beer shipped to Louisianna and pick it up there.

That's what I said, too, but the guy said something along the lines that they were only interested in getting into markets where they could distribute all their beer.

Geez, I remember my first beer too....

Just messing with you. Once/If you get into the beer culture or develop a taste, I recommend sour beers like the Geuze style. It's definitely an acquired taste, but they are well worth it. Nothing like you have ever tasted before.

Now, the only drawback to high gravity beers is that they tend to be very pricey. And as you have apparently figured out, they aren't for general, everyday (necessarily) drinking. I still stick with my Bud Lite or the like for gamedays, otherwise you'll be paying for it the next day.

Pick you up a Brother Thelonious. It is an abbey similar to Chimay. They sell it in Madison at the Hops and Habannas. Chimay is my favorite. The Blue and Red are slightly different but these are treated like a fine wine to me. Slow sip and appreciate each mouthful. The yeast and flavors explode.

If you let them get close to room temp they are even better.

Now some people hate them but they are the best to me.

As per IPA I have not found one I like yet because I am not a big hops fan.

Rankin can't sell singles? I didn't know that. What defines a single? Shirley, 12-16 oz.

Not sure if there is any size restriction, can't sell any individual items, hence why you see signs at the Walmart telling people not to take those margarita things out of the pack.

When the cap was raised, I wondered why we never saw any Rogues, Abitas, etc in Rankjn grocery stores. The Raise Your Pints confirmed that bombers are considered singles, thus they are a no go in Rankin. Guess that's another fight we'll have to pick with Rev Almighty out at Oakdale Baptist.

Another interesting thing about Timber Beast is it spews every time you open one. Even if you just removed it from fridge and gently open it **** goes everywhere.

Surprised Rev Oakdale hasn't put an end to mix & match 6'ers at Kroger. You can in fact by a single of 6 different things and put them in a 6 pack.

Typical Mississippi ********. For decades it was legal to buy pure grain everclear, but not beer at a small fraction of that strength.

And now you can't buy one beer, you have to buy 6. Boy that will keep people less drunk.
