OT: Missing Titanic Sub

Anyone else following this story closely? A sub carrying 5 people to view the Titanic has been missing since Sunday.

Anyone have theories on what happened? I figured a catastrophic failure happened on way down…causing the vessel to lose contact..and likely killing the crew instantly. However, overnight reports indicating rescuers have identified “banging noises” coming from the area of the expedition. Is crew still alive? Is vessel caught onto the Titanic? (Pretty much making recovery impossible)? Has it surfaced somewhere? No way to get out of it…and estimated only 24 hours of oxygen left inside the vessel. Nightmare fuel for sure.

There is a CBS reporter who went on a voyage with these folks and did a piece on it. He casually mentioned the other day on Twitter that another dive during the same voyage (not the one he was one) went 'missing' for 5 hours.

Why anybody would go to the bottom of the ocean with this particular company is beyond my understanding.

Personally, I don't know why someone would want to put themselves into a steel capsule, get bolted in with no way out, and go to the bottom of the ocean at all.

My guess is there's an awful lot that will come out in the next few weeks that puts the company in a not great light whether the submersible is found soon by some miracle or not. The lawsuit that people are referencing from their employee a few years ago is probably the tip of the iceberg (pun not intended).

Saw an interview of a guy who went on one of these. He said the words "Risk of Death " appears 3 times on the first page of the waiver you have to sign and goes on to list all the ways you may die. He said, death is always on your mind.

They said that banging was heard every half hour for a bit and then again 4 hours later. Also said the passengers had to sign a waiver knowing that the vehicle wasn't certified. Even if they found it, I don't know that they'd be able to raise it in time.

There are some people in this world who gravitate towards activities such as this because of the inherent danger. The billionaire that the news headlines reference appears to be one of those thrill seekers. He's already been to space in one of the travel-to-space-for-cash outfits, and been to the bottom of the Mariana Trench in another submersible.

There are legal complexities here since it is maritime but generally you can't make people sign a waiver and then that's it - no worries. I don't know details here but everything smells like a company where discovery would show varying degrees of negligence. Plus families of people who can afford to spend 250k on a dive probably have very good attorneys.

why? uber rich people doing stupid things need to have the US taxpayer spend even more for what?

Ukraine is bad enough, at some point people need to just say 'fk around and find out'

I'm not sure how much better it is to be looking out a window at the Titanic versus looking at it through a camera while floating on a ship at the surface. You'll probably see less, in fact.

You smarten up you dope. What does that have to do with not allowing the British to bring a vehicle that can actually do the job, and on the UK's dime? Let them spend money on rescue and let the US go home.

I don't think we'd go home in that scenario. It would just be more people looking.

I don't know if there are drawbacks to having more vehicles in the area. Perhaps it makes it harder to track via sound?

From all the reports out, I don't know how people trusted this thing. Apparently it is being controlled by an old gaming controller that I wouldn't use on a gaming pc.

Where is the drawback of bringing in a vehicle that can actually do the job?
