Prior to Katrina there were public piers everywhere: Pass Christian, Long Beach, Gulf Port, etc... They still have not rebuilt any of them. They built 1 in Bay St Louis post-Katrina in Bay St Louis (Waveland) that was good for fishing. It was destroyed late last summer in a storm. Why are they not rebuilding these? It's great leisure for the public and folks of lesser means use them for food. My dad and cousin have a boat but sometimes I like going to the pier b/c it doesn't require gas or cleaning. It freaking sucks there aren't any public piers right now.

We just bought a kayak to fish all the natural reefs the state put a cpl hundred yards of the beach. I've heard you can snag some trout early in the a.m. out there. Has anyone tried this?

Ocean Springs has one, but it's right on the harbor where all the boats come in.

Katrina reef on South side of Deer island - sometimes you can snag some specks, can always snag some white trout.

Ah. Our place is in Pass Christian so I haven't really looked that far. Thanks.

I use to catch a few early morning trout

by stopping to wade in front of the William Carrey campus on my way to school as a teenager. The deeper water is slightly closer to the shore near the pedestrian walk over Hwy 90.

Also use to catch some good fish at the catwalk just West of the Gulfport harbor where the Grand Casino use to be. I talked to a guy this weekend from Long Beach that led me to believe the catwalk is still open.

I've also caught a few rat reds at the new Ken Combs (R.I.P) pier on Courthouse Rd. back when it was still under construction.

But if you really want to get into some poor man fishing, buy a lantern and a flounder gig and catch the tides just right. I remember times when we use to pick up 60 flounder in a night back when I lived over there.

i was going to start a similar thread the other day. we went snapper fishing last weekend at dolphin island but i am wanting to do some pier fishing this weekend somewhere. i've gone to the pier at the pass yacht club and had decent luck but was curious if anyone knew of any spots that are doing any good right now. i'm not opposed to wade fishing.

Get on google earth and look for places where deeper(darker) water is closer to shore. If you can find an area that has a steep drop off as well as some sort of structure near by (old pier pilings, etc), you can do well. The wade fishing along the Pass Christian/LB beaches was really hot a few weeks ago. You can still do well early in the AM. I caught some good trout just west of the PC harbor a few weeks ago on a few different trips.

The specks on these reefs can be hit or miss, but you can almost always find some white trout on them from early spring through fall. The specks are on a lot of them right now and slowly transitioning out. Get out there early and watch the wind. It's a lot of fun in a kayak, but can get nasty in a hurry.

Most, if not all were re-built after Katrina but damaged again last year during Isaac. The one in the Bay is currently under construction as are others in Hancock County. Gulfport and Biloxi piers should be under construction soon as well. Part of the delays are associated with FEMA and their requirements.

The one between Biloxi and Ocean Springs is finished but is a little controversial for some locals. It cost a cool million to complete. This is definitely the cadillac of piers. You can drive down it, park, and fish by the truck. It has a large turnaround area at the end.
