I figured now, between baseball weekend series and no damn "crootin," was a good time to start a music thread. That and I was just introduced to JJ Grey and Mofro a few weeks ago, and I can't get enough.

Have any of y'all ever heard of these guys before? I describe them as: Blues Brothers meet Allman Brothers with a lil' Motown, Harry Connick Jr. (because of the lead guy's accent on live albums), and Joe Cocker sprinkled in.

Was just wondering how great they were live. The one live album I have sounds better than the rest. Just wondered if that translated live, for I'm looking into spending some hard earned money to go see them.

Big fan. Been listening to them for a couple years. Orange Blossoms is one my favorite cds. He came through Jackson/Hattiesburge a while back (last fall).

Only $28M to play at your wedding, btw. Don't ask me how I know that.

Been listening to JJ & Mofro for a couple of years too. Great music. Never seen them live though so no help there.

June 1st, Slicefest, downtown Birmingham. I've seen them 6 times and each show is a full throttle jam of guitars, horns, and piano/hammond organ...I'm thinking it's Tony Joe White meets Skynyrd meets Memphis Horns...They don't have a bad disc out there IMHO...

Over the last few years, they have become one of my favorite bands of all time. Incredible songwriter and performer. Very unique sound. Sometimes funky, sometimes rock 'n' roll. Always soulful. "Front porch soul" as some refer to his music. The new album is great. The song, "Somebody Else" sounds like it could've been an Al Green record back in the day. Their live shows are great. As a matter of fact, I'm trying to figure out how to convince my wife that we need to leave for the beach a day early so I can sidetrack over to B'ham for Slicefest to see them.

They were the best live back in 2003-2005...

when they had a different and better lineup. Orange Blossoms and Lochloosa were good records but the newer stuff released afterward all runs together to me.

If you download live shows, look for the ones from 2003-2005 especially when they toured with the North Mississippi Allstars. I first got exposed to Mofro in Philly, PA when they opened for the Allstars and they absolutely showed them up that night.
