She loved watching sports, especially SEC football (although she had nieces and nephews who went to Iowa and Iowa State, so she rooted for them too).

funny story- we went over to the 2003 NCAA basketball tourney in Birmingham to watch State play Butler. She told me that was the first basketball game she had attended since High School in Mt. Ayr, Iowa in 1952, when she and another coed kept a chart of every shot the High School team took (and made or missed).
At halftime, they'd give the chart to the Head coach (who was a run-and-gun coach like Loyola Marymount in the late 1980's), who'd then have his team make adjustments to where they'd shoot.

When Butler made that last second shot, mom and I were so depressed that we literally didn't move the next day. Sunday, when we decided to give away our tickets at church.

Very, very sad to hear that. I lost my father 3 years ago and talking sports was our biggest connection. I like that you recalled the fond/funny memories, though. I will always cherish those times with my dad as well.

My sincerest condolences.

Real sorry to hear this, brah. This is a tough one.

At the rising sun and at its going down; We remember them.
At the blowing of the wind and in the chill of winter; We remember them.
At the opening of the buds and in the rebirth of spring; We remember them.
At the blueness of the skies and in the warmth of summer; We remember them.
At the rustling of the leaves and in the beauty of the autumn; We remember them.
At the beginning of the year and when it ends; We remember them.
As long as we live, they too will live, for they are now a part of us as We remember them.

I'm sorry for your loss. A lot of the great memories I have of my Dad involve sports, but I can't say that about my Mom. It's cool that you and your Mom had that bond among the countless others.

Sorry to hear that, Mutt. There's nothing like having children and losing loved ones as we get older to put things into perspective at time. That's a hilarious story about the shot chart. The things we used to have to do without technology...

My sincere condolences. My mom passed away last year at the ripe old age of 95. Even though she lived a long good life, its never easy letting go.

So sorry, "Mutt"...

Lost my mom in 2008, and it's still hard to think of her not here. I wish for you, the most wonderful memories of your mother, each day - her smile, her humor, her wisecracks, or her laughs. May the Lord of love bless you and your family at this sad time.

Thanks for sharing, Mutt. I said a prayer for you and your family.

Well done, Ms. Mutt. Bet you'll have the best seat in house for the upcoming bowl games.
