This is fastest if you live on west side or sylvan park. If you live south of town (cool springs or brentwood), the fastest is through florence alabama and back roads.

Longest but easiest drive is through bham.

Nicest drive (and can be quickest, depending on where you start from, spring hill or leipers fork) is natchez trace to tupelo. I only take the trace between sept - nov because it is one of the prettiest drives youll see. That said, go 70. Ive done this route about 30 times and never seen a cop. Bonus is when you are hungover driving back sunday, you can stop and eat at loveless cafe.

Hauling *** I can make it from my door (sylvan park) to davis wade in 4 hours to 4:15. Trace is about 4:30. Florence is about the same from my starting point. Bham is a little over 5 hours.

Yeah, really depends on which part of town you live in. I have friends in Cool Springs/Franklin and once they started taking the Alabama backroads, they haven't stopped.

wife is from franklin and i made the trip to starkville from there alot in college.

for ease and pure speed, do this. if youre a speeder, you'll get there faster this way

just go 65 to bham and cut over to tuscaloosa and across 82 to starkville. easy drive and 4 lane almost the whole way.

I would go I65 S to Decatur, AL and then turn west. Then things get kind of weird:

Take Hwy 24 West to Russellville, AL (4 lane the whole way - no issues).
Take Hwy 43 S to Hamilton, AL
Take Hwy 17 S out of Hamilton to Hartley-Detroit Road (on the MS/AL state line)
Take Hartley-Detroit Road to Splunge Road (that's right, there is a Splunge, MS)
Splunge Road will T into 278 in MS
Take 278 about 2 miles up to Hwy 8.
Hwy 8 will take you into Aberdeen where Hwy 25 meets on the west side of town.
Hwy 25 will take you just north of West Point.
West Point get on 45 Alt S to Starkville.

I prefer taking AL-17 all the way to Vernon (it's 4-lane non-divided highway between Sulligent and Vernon) until you get to AL-18, then heading west on AL-18. It turns into MS-12 and takes you to US-82. The speed limits aren't as high on 17 and 18 compared to 278 and 45, but not having to go through traffic lights in West Point makes up for it.

If you do 65>Bham>Tusc definitely take the Tuscaloosa bypass

Gets you out of that **** hole state a bit faster and definitely worth the +/- $3 toll. Just don't speed going through Reform, AL once you get off of it

Almost. When you're on 24, continue on to Red Bay, and take the new bypass around there to Hwy. 25. That takes you down to 78. Keeps you on 4 lane more of the time too. They may still be in the process of 4 lane-ing 24, and surely that Red Bay bypass is complete by now.

ETA: Upon a quick look at Google Earth, the Red Bay bypass ends now at 23. Take that down through Tremont and onto 78.

I would've guessed 40-45. It may be more miles but screw all that 2 lane traffic. I'd stroke out getting stuck behind the driver doing 5 mph under the speed limit.

This is the fastest route, has plenty of stops for peepee and refreshments/stretch legs too. You can also take this route to Tupelo by jumping on 78/22 there off of 43.

I go from Huntsville through Decatur, Russelville, Hamilton, Guin, Fayette, then Columbus. In over 40 years of going back, that has become my favorite route. Do NOT recommend going through B'ham and Tuscaloosa.

Lots of good suggestions here, but the most reliable way to get the fastest route is to use Waze. It's not just a regular GPS app. It uses historical and real time traffic data to build routes and provide drive time estimates. It's not perfect, but it's going to take a lot more factors into consideration than humans like time of day and day of week. The estimated arrival times are scary accurate too. I've had estimates on 3 hour drives (where I did not stop) be accurate to the minute.

This is the way I go although I've also turned onto 278 in Sulligent and gone through Aberdeen and West Point. I prefer going through Vernon even though it's a couple of miles farther.
