What's considered slow in the left lane?

I was guilty on 78 this weekend. I was doing 80mph (70 is limit) and had to get over a few times for people on my bumper.

I drive highway 90 on the Coast everyday, speed limit is 45. I stay in the right lane going probably not more than 50 usually and it's constant people going at least 60 or 70 the entire time in the left lane. THE PROBLEM is no one is pulling them over, very rare to see anyone pulled over. I10 is much worse.

We have RV friends who we travel with at least once per year. They’re retired and he will tell you that he’s in no hurry to get anywhere. He drives about 63 mph IN the left lane. It drives me crazy. A RV accentuates the poor road conditions. It’s not the motorhome itself, it’s the plates, cups and all the crap in the cabinets that you carry. The left lane is always smoother than the right. I generally find some excuse to meet them at our destination rather than convoy with them because I generally drive whatever the flow of traffic is.

If someone faster than you is approaching you, you are slow. Don't matter if you are doing 50, 80, or 100. Jamming up traffic and impeding flow is a safety issue. They recognize this in Germany and the US traffic fatality rate is 3 times higher than Germany per 100,000 people. And Germany has a superspeedway running through the country where they adhere to the left lane is for passing only rule.

The people that say "I'm doing the limit... they should be too." While in the left lane is not making anything safer.. they are making it more dangerous. Everyone needs to leave speed enforcement to the highway patrol.

I do not understand these people at all. Regardless what speed you want to drive, why would you want to subject yourself to the stress of the traffic jams you are creating and everyone around you having to jockey for position to pass you on the right? So much easier and more relaxing to just drive in the right lane. I'm convinced anyone doing this has at least a little bit of a$$h0le in him.

The rule should say the "far left" lane, so it includes roads that have more than 2 lanes in each direction. That's common in large more urban areas, and is fairly common on rural highways.

Left lane camping is illegal in Alabama now, and it's even enforced occasionally. I've also heard of people getting a ticket for failing to signal a lane change (that's a pet peeve on mine).

Why are you worried about them? You are a good driver so mind your own business. You are speeding too. ***

It is illegal in MS too but I have never seen a person pulled over in MS or AL for impeding traffic.

I know you used the sarcasterisks but the reason it bothers me is that I have kids and my wife out there driving too. I taught them to be good drivers as well, I don't worry about them, but I worry about the other tards out there hitting them.

Actually, I'd argue going 50 on a busy highway with 45MPH speed limit is almost borderline unsafe. At least he's in the right lane though. And yeah, the people doing 60 aren't his problem, and I suspect very few are doing 70 on that highway (at least not back when I used to drive it a LOT).

If you are teaching them then your maximum speed should be 45. That is a limit not a suggestion.

If I was in the left lane I obviously wouldn't be going 50 in a 45, that's my point, I choose to drive that way because it's safer and I'm just not in a hurry to get to work. But yes you will see people absolutely flying down hwy 90 at 8 and 5. I've been doing it for years so I know. AND the funny thing is the idiot that is weaving in and out of cars, will usually be right beside you again at a red light miles ahead of when they passed you. I learned that it just doesn't matter that much many years ago.

I bet you won't stay in the left lane on 72 west between the AL state like and Iuka. I do know driving in the right lane can get you a ticket but I would argue the left lane on that stretch of highway is almost un-drivable. I just make sure I stay way ahead of what is behind me.

I am fine moving over to the right lane to let cars by, does not matter if I am doing 70, 80, or more. The ones that pi$$ me off are going about 100 and buzz upon your rear and start flashing their lights, like I don't see you. I still get over because getting shot over driving is stupid.

Turn signals seem to be the exception these days. Why let anyone know your intentions? Im constantly checking to see whether my turn signals work, because no one seems to believe me when I use them.

When I signal a lane change, I'm not telling you to quickly get in that lane and speed up.

Huge pet peeve of mine too. I told my kids when they started driving, the blinker isn't for you. It's for everyone else.

If a left lane passer is going at least 70 in a 70 mph limit road and you are impatient because you want to go 75-80 it's on you Dog. If he's going less than 70, then he needs to get back in the right lane and let you pass first.

I’m always amazed at the anger this causes some people. Have you considered alerting your elected officials to the condition of the road and asking them to get the right lane fixed? Your lack of civic responsibility triggers me. 17 you.

There is a section of Hwy 45 north just south of Scooba that has several miles of slow rollers like waves. It’s been repaved in the last few years and it’s actually worse than before. Driving in a car or truck it’s barely noticeable but the frequency of the little hills and valleys in the pavement match the wheel base of a motorhome so that one axle is dropping in a trough while the other axle it peaking a rise. At 65-75 mph it’s almost uncontrollable I’d like for someone with MDOT to ride that section of hwy with me.

Rather than get mad at the left lane losers, we need to engage in a national educational effort. Pass them on the right, then (without cutting them off) get in front of them in the left lane and gradually reduce your speed to lower than they are comfortable driving. For those who have any intelligence (so about 10% of them), the lightbulb might go off and they realize the error of their ways. For the other 90%, they will continue to remain in the left lane no matter how slow you are going, even 15mph in a 70mph zone. These are the ones who are ruining the gene pool and need to be exterminated (figuratively speaking).

I've won way more than my fair share of fast driving awards and am on a first name basis with a state trooper in my area. I also drive our class A towing a Jeep over 3 hours to Starkville then back home again back home many times a year. I typically drive the RV somewhere between the posted limit and 5 over. It doesn't matter if I'm driving my "get me in trouble" car or my bus, I keep to the right lane unless I'm passing. The only exception is a certain 2.5 mile stretch of cratered southbound right lane highway that I refuse to drive on in anything. So, if you get behind my RV in that 2.5 mile stretch, I'll just be that guy you hate for a few minutes. Just be nice and keep in mind that most folks that travel in an RV are armed.

Never shot anyone, but I have thought about reaching under the seat a few times.

PLEASE PEOPLE: do NOT get in the lefthand lane unless you are actively passing or about to turn left. You can go 90 miles an hour in the left hand lane all you want, but somebody is going to be going 95 (maybe me) and needs you out of their way.

So get over to the right as soon as the opportunity presents itself.

It's safer and Jesus expects you to.

Yep. I don't camp out in the left lane. But if I am doing 75 or 80 in a 70 speed limit while passing and you run up behind me doing 95, you get to wait 5 seconds. And stick it in your ear while you are at it.
