OT: new iPhone 5s or Galaxy S Note 3 or something else?

Just get the $99 iPhone 5 from Walmart

It's secure and kept within the apple A7 chip. James Bond isn't stealing your fingerprint and purchasing a Lexus.
I got the iPhone 5 a few weeks ago ($99 Walmart) and LOVE it. A phone just doesn't need to get bigger than that.
My kids have android tablets, I use an iphone...
The Google Play store is full of absolute trash. I cringe every time they download a new app because I don't know what crap it's going to inject into the OS. Until Google does a better job screening apps I won't buy another android product.
On top of that... the only time I use their tablets is to watch HBO GO. Several weeks back android updated itself overnight to the newest version. After that HBO GO is no longer compatible and won't work. .....Who refreshes their OS and purposefully breaks old apps? No word on when it'll be fixed.

Get the HTC One, if its available.
New Galaxy Note- Do you have a Kindle or something like that? If not, take a 7 inch picture frame and hold it to your ear. Yep, thats like talking on a Galaxy Note.
The new iphone is great and all, im sure. the processor is apparently 40x faster than the current iphone processor. If you like apple/want an iphone, go grab it.
they are easy to use, reliable, and expensive as hell. Ive read the camera is better(it couldnt get worse), so thats neato too.
What you are asking about are two phones on totally different ends of the spectrum. Different operating systems, huge difference is size, etc.
If the HTC One is available for your service- get it. It has a great battery life, excellent camera(especially in lower light), the screen is fantastic, audio is solid and comes out the front where it should, and its big enough to actually watch/look at something but still small enough to use with 1 hand.
The iphone wastes so much space at the top and bottom of the screen, its a shame.
And with the HTC One, you wont have fingerprint ID! I am not worried my fingerprints would be uploaded to a database that could be accessed via court order, but I would take issue with the fact that passwords are protected under the right to not self incriminate, but fingerprints do not apply. You can be forced to use your fingerprint to unlock your phone as fingerprints arent private and are left all over the place daily.
As for those suggesting you get the old iphone from Walmart- sure thats a great idea, if you want old technology. If you want a slower processor, smaller screen, worse battery life, and a bad camera(sorry all- its bad)- then get the old iphone.
If you are really concerned about cost, dont get a phone right now- they are all money pits.

If by old you mean the one that is still their newest they sell, then yes, it's very old. The iPhone 5's camera is 8 megapixels, more than enough. It also charges 5x faster than the 4, and holds a charge much better, not to mention it's much lighter. I'm not against android, but just pointing out most of what you posted is false.

The same way a 2010 Chrysler Pacifica is the newest version of the vehicle, but its old compared to competitor vehicles that have just rolled out into the market.
Its old when compared to what you can get in the market. You can get processors that are faster, screens that are cleaner, screens that are larger, batteries that last longer, and speakers that are clearer.
As for the camera...I have just never been impressed with it in dim light. Pictures constantly come out grainy and blurry compared to other cameras. If it helps, its not the worst recently created camera- that belongs to my wife's HTC Windows phone. What a POS that thing is.

Easiest question - do you want a big screen? Android is the only choice, and probably the Samsung S3 or Note. You said Note, and that's a huge screen.
If you are OK with the iphone's smallish screen size, next question....what do you like more - every latest, coolest, most bleeding edge feature or do you value stability, reliability, and ease of use? If you want every latest cool feature, like configuring/figuring out stuff, etc - go with the Samsung. If you prefer ease of use, fewer bugs, reliability, etc - go with the apple.
Me, I'm more about reliability and ease of use even though I was once a gearhead that wanted the latest everything and didn't mind figuring it all out. Apple is so easy my mother can use it, seriously. My family is embedded in the apple ecosystem - facetime, music sharing, messaging, and all...so I'm all Apple for the foreseeable future.
And here's where they get ya....you get embedded in their ecosystem which is pretty cool then you start looking at their computers - which are way the hell too expensive. So expensive its ridiculous.
Cameras....well these tiny lenses are never going to be real good. Anyway there are major improvements in the new iPhone 5S camera. Its supposed to be da ****. I've read the specs and I'm impressed. The "old" iPhone 5 was already a decent improvement over the 4S, which is what I have.
I look forward to getting a 5S myself...which I'm doing mainly for the 4G speed. The camera is gravy. I'll also enjoy the fingerprint thing so I don't have to swipe or put in a code to turn on/unlock the phone.

As a person that went from Android to iOS - the reliability is the best thing. My phone and apps just work. That's all I want.
Apple has the best APP selection by far. I have a 4s and it is great, I probably will upgrade to 5s in late November.
I have an android tablet and the lack of availability of apps vs the apple ipad is unbelievable.
Apple products are also much easier to use imo...
