The Rest is History

I guess I'm officially old now, for I never thought I would find a conversation between two blokes talking about history to be entertaining. I stumbled across them a few weeks ago. I've gone through the Mary Queen of Scots saga, Lord Byron, and just finished most of their coverage of Horatio Nelson and Trafalgar. Ready to watch Master and Commander again.

I found out that Tom Holland's (not Spider-Man) brother, James, also does a podcast with comedian Al Murray that is strictly about WWII. Haven't checked that one out yet, but the latter is quite funny.

I'm not much of a podcast person but while traveling I like to listen to The Fat Electrician on YouTube. If you like history he's a good listen.

If you have kids that are interested in history, the History Matters YouTube channel is pretty funny and has little quick videos about different events in history that might catch their interest.

Love those. One of those was the first link I sent a bud when he asked about The Spanish American war for his daughter's assignment.

The Rest is History is great. Holland has written some of the best history books in the last 15-20 years. Dominion is a good read.

If you enjoy these, I highly recommend The Wager by David Grann. Once I started the audiobook it was just about impossible to stop.

I'll have to add that to my list. I've resisted Kindles & audio books for decades. Yet, I'm now enjoying extremely long podcasts that I pause & pick back up again.

With a wife & kids now, it's probably the only way I'll "read" books for the foreseeable future.

I just keep thinking of that Seinfeld episode where George doesn't read for he hates the sound of his own voice in his head. He tries audiobooks and it's his voice reading!

I pretty much had the same thoughts, but I’ve come to really like audiobooks. I listen some while driving longer distances, but mostly just out walking.

Because I’m in my cheap middle aged dude era, I use Libby. It works through your public library & is free. I’ve been astounded at the quality and breadth of the selection.

I used to commute an hour a day one way for work in DFW and audiobooks saved my sanity. Started listening and any frustration or internal road rage disappeared.
