I don't get it, the new Mountain West is complete *** after the split with the PAC 12, they got a low ball TV deal including some streaming service I've never heard of. North Dakota State would have to pay millions to the NCAA for moving up and to the Mountain West for joining. I guess being the biggest fish in a small pond is boring for them but I don't see how they retain any relevance in the future.

They have to make the jump at some point I’d imagine. St. Thomas is on the similar trajectory imo. Feels like that school is set to explode

Mountain West has to pick up teams because 4 of the members will join the new Pac12 conference.

This is a good move for the Bison have a cousin who has season tickets there and says it’s been boring until the playoffs because only 3 or 4 teams Missouri Valley would challenge them.

NIL portal entries are killing NDSU and SDSU. I think NDSU should think twice before moving. I think it would be a financial disaster for them.

Who? They haven't won ****. I can see a half a dozen other schools jumping up before St. Thomas.

Paying $12 million to the Mountain West to move up, $5 million to the NCAA. The MW TV deal pays legacy members $3.5 million a year, new members get less. I failed math in school but that seems like an absolutely terrible financial decision for NDSU.

Yeah but after they dominate the MW for 3-5 years they'll be ready for a move to the BIG 12.... details aside I'm sure that's what they're thinking.

I dont think they are delusional. They have the administration and the coaches to be successful, so why not. It's not like their Nebraska - Stuck with sh÷t for the last 10 years.
They have to add 20 plus roster spots for football if they're at 63 currently, by doing that they'll also have to add a women's sport most likely, so additional cost on top of the 17 million for moving.

I wonder if they will try to cut some mens sports instead to get title 9 compliant. But either way, they are just looking for more money and will somewhat lose their brand.

BUT if they can sneak into the playoffs that is really all that will matter for them.

I predict that this doesn't end well. I worked for three years at the University of North Dakota, NDSU's hated rival. The Bison world demands football championships, and they don't tolerate any reason for falling short. But it's one thing to beat Sam Houston State and Montana for a national title; they are going to find out real quick that beating Georgia and Ohio State is a whole different matter. If they go 7-4 and don't make the playoffs, those lunatic fans will be calling for the coach's head on a platter.
There is no way NDSU will be able to keep up with the big dogs in the NIL game either.

Stupid question here but does NDSU have any Oil and Natty Gas donors?

I think people underestimate how stagnant NDSU football has become. They have been struggling to sell out, even for some playoff games. They are a victim of their success.

They also had the risk of this being their one and only opportunity.

Oil money mentioned prominently in this interesting article:
Very simplistic article. I think it's the right move, but that article tying NDSU to oil riches is a stretch. ND's oil drilling is a lot more fickle than Texas. They are already shutting down some drilling right now due to low prices.

The Texas oil money also goes back a couple generations, ND's about 2 decades. The ND oil patch is also literally across the state from Fargo. I assume Texas Tech has an oil program. I'm not sure NDSU does.

Are you sure? They’ve had turnover as well.

And they’ve been failing to deliver those championships of late.

Interesting thought. A quick look finds the school offers 7 sports for both men’s and women’s teams. Have to wonder supporting a men’s baseball team who likely spends the first 6-8 weeks playing away games would be the program to be cut??
