Lupa is the less expensive, more convivial of Mario Batali's restaurants. Im a big fan. Great good and atmosphere if you don't mind a bit of noise.

If you want something tasty but a little different - casual and festive try The Meatball Shop. There's one in meat packing district (right by hi line) and one in the village. Fun place.

I've always enjoyed the Spice Market in the meat packing district. Very good (albeit spicy) food at reasonable prices for NYC. If you've got more than 8 people, you can get one of their unique private rooms, which are really conducive to dinner conversation.

I second Buddakan, especially if you're got a decent sized group. The place shows off great and the food is quite good. Spice market is also a good choice.

I second Spice Market, if you're into palate pleasing adventures. If you're not familiar with SE Asian cuisine ask the waiter for suggestions of popular dishes. These guys/gals know what gets ordered regularly. If you or anyone in your party is more into plain old meat and potatoes or looking for the chicken cutlet entree stay away. Most importantly, if you plan on doing Meat Packing reserve well in advance. Lastly, I would not do Italian in the Meat Packing Distric. You can get similar food anywhere else in the city for half the price. But yes, there are several well reviewed Italian restaurants and I've been to a few of them, but none have impressed me.
