OT: Oregon track facility

I’m a big athletic facility geek. For those that don’t know, Hayward Field is Oregon’s track stadium. It hosts the Olympic Trials almost all the time. They demolished the original and built a new track only facility that recently opened. My office was on the same block as Hayward when I worked at Oregon so sucked seeing the historic stadium demolished but what they built is ridiculous.

I still don’t understand how Oregon doesn’t absolutely dominate college athletics.

I played a D3 sport post military. It was miserable shoveling off the field in the spring, training in a **** box weight room, and doing my own laundry for equipment.

Having these kinds of facilities as an athlete gives you a massive advantage when it comes to development. I’d never leave.

I think a lot of it is that pretty much all big time schools have great facilities for basketball and football. Oregon made a major leap in both football and basketball when they improved their respective facilities. But there is a limit to what you can do. Many schools have followed suit.

Oregon went from a nothing program pretty much across the board until the 90’s and are now a top 10ish overall program. Their rise over the past 25 years has been impressive, most of it due to Nike money.

Track is different. There isn’t anything that even comes close to the track facility. They are already a too 5 program in track and field. This will probably land them at #1 consistently.
