Just wanted to let all that are interested know that I was just at Wines Etc. In Columbus, MS and they actually have a bottle of Pappy van Winkle Family Reserve for sale. I almost **** a brick but then discovered they wanted $400 for it...one day I will get to try VanWinkle but I refuse to spend $400 on a bourbon that I've never even tried. I just thought some of you that have more money than you know what to do with might be interested.

Ugh, yeah people with more money than sense are paying up to $800 a bottle for the 20 yr. I'll agree that it is good, but if you look around, you can find bourbon that is pretty close to as good for suggested retail. I have a couple bottles of Jefferson presidential that came from the same barrels as the pappys and those were right around $100 each. Problem is, you can't find those anymore either.
We got on the pappy's bus before everyone else did and were buying it for around $90 a bottle (20yr). It has always been hens teeth, but that was only b/c there is very little produced. Up until about three years ago, if you knew when and where to look, you could find it no problem. We have a pretty decent stash of it and if I had my way, I would sell every bit of it, but the S.O. won't sell (just my luck, a woman won't sell bourbon at 9 times what she paid for it).
it isn't the abc, it is the store owners. There are so few cases allocated to MS that they jack the prices wayyyy up and someone will come along and pay it.

There are fewer cases on the market this year. Someone stole 65 cases of the 20 year and 9 cases of the 13 year from the distillery.

A local HS principal is a person of interest for allegedly trying to sell a stolen bottle to a local liquor store up here.
Its amazing what people will pay for PVW 23 yr old. It retails for $130 up here. The one good thing about moving to Kentucky has been that locals have hook ups for getting PVW and also for getting some good bourbon that tastes just as good for 1/4 the price.

ABC gets an FOB case price. They mark it up 27.5% and add a $5.50 per case delivery fee. Licensees pay 7% sales tax when they buy it from the State. Average off-premise markup across the state is about 30%, but since each off-premise account is individually owned (nobody is allowed to own more than 1 off-premise account in MS), every store has a different price. The suppliers would like to see a uniform price across the country, so the price they offer MS ABC anticipates those fees and a 30% markup.
There is not a bottle of bourbon known to man worth $400. Pappy is worth less than 100 bucks but the frenzy hype has driven up the price. It's simple business. The best product in the world costing $50 will cause someone to sell a similar product for $75 simply b/c some simple minded people will feel better about themselves for spending more money on said product. That said, if you can responsibly purchase $400 a bottle bourbon, more power to you my brother.
The bourbon business has never been better. You're right, there are plenty of good brands out there to not have to pay $400 a bottle for a marketing campaign.
I honestly think Justified had was a huge part of its sudden spike in demand. And I am not kidding.

If you can get a bottle of 15 (better than the 20 and 23 btw) for $80 go for it. Other than that start trying the other great bourbons out there. Like blue said, bourbon is as good and interesting as it has ever been.

Give it a shot. A friend of mine just got a job with them and gave me a bottle. It's distiller in Port barrels and has a distinct finish. He was going to give me the Rye too but I'm not a big Rye fan, I've heard good things though.

On ebay they are selling empty bottles of Winkle for around 20 bucks.
Buy an empty bottle fill it up with a Beam bourbon and offer it to your buddies and let them marvel over the finest bourbon they have ever tasted....I doubt that any would know the difference.
I was a scotch drinker myself. Can't stand the taste of bourbon...
