What’s going on at Parchman? 3 deaths, 2 escaped, riots, fires and all while on lockdown.
Here’s a wild thought.
Take cable and all other amenities away.
Make them grow their own food without pay.
Make them do other work without pay.
Use that extra money to pay more guards higher wages.
I mean it’s 17ing prison.
contraband is easy to obtain in Parchman.
I partially buy this but I can guarantee you the government can’t be more efficient.
The problem I’m guessing is corruption/lobbying. Bids should be competitive and very easy for the public to see the process.
If a private company is gouging the government, someone would be willing to come in and do it cheaper to still make a profit be it smaller.
I mean it’s a double positive.
Saves tax payer money and they learn some skills to be used when they are rehabilitated.
One more quick stat: it costs Mississippi $53.72 per day per inmate, again, before legal costs.
With the above lock up rate, that's 20,160 prisoners in Mississippi on average. Multiply that times the above cost 1.082m/day, nearly $400m/yr. I just checked and apparently Mississippi has 754k taxpayers total. Final math:
Our prison population is costing you $530 in taxes per year.
Illinois pardoned something like 800,000 "crimes" just last year.
You didnt say it was that simplistic, but you also didnt say all that would be necessary for your view to happen. Not really sure what your point is here- you act like you arent claiming its simple while you dont list how difficult it would be.I didn’t say it was that simplistic and not all for profit companies are immoral pieces of ****.
And this is the only message that will ever drive change. Why? Because prisons are the ultimate “out of sight / out of mind” problem for the overwhelming majority of the voting public. For the most part, nobody cares if they are eating their own fecal matter or sleeping on a concrete slab. After all, they are criminals and they deserve to be there, right? Gotta show the dollars to get any sort of real reform.
