Keep depending on them for your essentials and keep being let down or keep getting taxed more and more.

you do you brother. Sorry you aren't man enough to take care of yourself.
Oh noes. Some dullard on a sports message board with predictable opinions said I ain't man enough. How will I ever manage in life? Glad you're sorry, though.

I fully agree, Congress has hamstrung the USPS to keep the cost of junk mail and letters artificially low. They do the same thing to Amtrak. Fliers and advertisement mailers should cost 10.00 each.
I was more so referring to the choice pricing China received for years(decades?) under UPU Agreements.
But yeah, the fact that USPS cant freely adjust rates to meet their costs and instead has to receive approval from an outside board, which inevitably means rate increases are lower than needed thru compromise, puts USPS in a tough situation to win.

paywall free version of the WSJ article
Just the cost of shipping one Mighty Mug within the U.S. would cost me $6.30… so how is a Chinese retailer sending a package 8,100 miles by plane, able to offer both the product and the shipping for lower than my shipping cost alone?
...
The USPS is part of an arcane arrangement with the Universal Postal Union (UPU), which is the postal arm of the United Nations. This arrangement grants Chinese businesses shipping rates within the US that are far below what American shippers pay.
...
Furthermore, this low shipping arrangement is not a two-way street. If we want to ship Mighty Mugs to China — now the largest e-commerce market in the world — the USPS will charge us over $22 to ship one mug.
...
The most absurd part of this arrangement is that the USPS loses money on all of these inbound China shipments, which a 2014 report from the Inspector General of the USPS detailed.

BTW, I will be dependent on the govt because, thanks to a Republican father-in-law, I was able to double-dip and now I'll get two pensions (state and federal) when I retire. We also invested well so that's gonna work out. My wife is dependent on bad Gubment cause her clinic accepts Medicare and Medicaid. Private Equity is looking to buy and get some of that Gubment bad money involved in healthcare. My farmer cousins in the Delta are multi-millionaires who accepted Gubment bad subsidies and thus aren't real men either cause they aren't taking care of themselves without some government support. They'll be disappointed to hear that when I tell them.

That isnt a useful or even applicable response to what I posted.

If you ran a business that had to make a profit, but you were forced to accept contracts that were a significant financial loss and couldn't raise pricing on other work to account for your costs, I am confident you would rant about it until you lost your voice.
I mean i wouldn't care if they lost money (assuming your info is 100% correct; I don't believe their current system forces them to lose money) if they ran an efficient business. They don't and many of their problems aren't due to lack of funding.

The head of a smaller post office makes quite a bit more than many restaurant managers with much better benefits and work life balance. they are also managing less employees who make more than restaurant workers.

Dont give me your whiny @SS BS about how they suck at their job b/c of money.

But the worst part is the stolen checks. We've had many checks stolen while in delivery. The FBI investigated and said there was a crime ring in the Postal Service, but did nothing. Along with us, there are nearly 20 local businesses that won't send checks via mail because of stolen checks by the post office personnel. .... I was just wondering if everyone's service is going downhill or is it just our area?
IRS says no more checks by mail. I imagine businesses need to do the same.

Also, many of those workers are either high or exhausted. Or both.

Live in 047 Brandon and work in Ridgeland. Don't have a problem at either location but we use FedEx to send checks and anything with a deadline. Only hurt us once

I have been getting calls from clients saying they never received mail we sent out back in April or May. Stuff is getting lost at the Jackson PO wayyyy too often.

We have also gotten several packages returned as undeliverable. We call the recipient back and they are like yep, that’s my address. It has gotten so out of hand that we are just going to go all electronic and do away with the post office altogether.

Our troubles started when all of our mail, even mail going across town, started to be sent to Memphis to be sorted. We never had that many problems till then.

Our troubles started when all of our mail, even mail going across town, started to be sent to Memphis to be sorted. We never had that many problems till then.

At one time, every town, no matter how small, had its own postmark. They did away with that some years ago and now there are only postmarks for the town where a mail distribution center is. For example, mail a letter from Huntsville and it gets a Birmingham post mark. About 15 years ago, the distribution center in Huntsville was closed, allegedly to save money. Since then, mail a letter to my next door neighbor and it's trucked to Birmingham, receives a Birmingham post mark, and is returned to Huntsville and gets delivered. The process, even when working as designed, takes 3-4 days. When there was a distribution center here, it would have been delivered the next day. Not to mention, the more handling, the greater the chance of getting lost.

I'm sure it's worse in Jackson/Memphis but it's even bad here in fancy-pants northwest Austin.
My wife gets screenshots of mail that is going to be delivered that day (cool service she signed up for). Last friday, she saw a jury summons in the screenshot, so we kept an eye out for it. It was supposed to be delivered that day (Friday) and hasn't shown up yet, despite other mail from that pic showing up that day. So she gets some id # that luckily was visible on the screenshot of the jury summons letter, plugs it into our local court web site, and sure enough she has a summons in 3 weeks. Likely the postal worker put it in the wrong box, but it happens pretty often (neighbors bring mail to us that's in their box, or vice versa).
I wonder what would happen if we never got that screenshot?
