We just got back from spending a few days with friends in Memphis, and we always have a great time, but good lord do they eat healthy. Breakfast is protein shakes, lunch is carrots and hummus, and dinner is salad. No one drinks anything but water, and goat cheese on pita chips is considered a splurge.

Do y’all know people like this? If so, do you just go shopping once you get there? Then, when they say they’re making salads for dinner, is it ok to order pizza?

They must live in Germantown. I really can’t imagine anyone in Memphis proper living like that. Who’s gonna turn down wangs, BBQ, Soul Food, and fried chicken for a salad? Not me that’s for sure.

They probably ordered double cheeseburgers after you left**

I think it just depends on the depth of the friendship. If you are staying with these people, it seems you are an close enough terms that you could Door Dash a burger and cheese-fries from Huey's, and I bet at least one person in that household would give a $100 bill for just a bite....

We visited my grandfather after he had quadruple bypass surgery. He told us that his doctor wanted him on a strict diet after the surgery. He asked the doctor if I do this diet how long will I live? The doctor told him about 20 years. Then he asked if I don't. The doctor said maybe 10 years. He told the doctor I'll take 10 years of enjoyment over 20 years of hell. He ended up living 25 more years and died of cancer. He had bacon, eggs and biscuits every morning for breakfast.

Why not go out to eat while you are visiting. They can order rabbit food while you eat what you want?

Can’t help much, people like that won’t associate with me.
But an area with a little crossover: my in-laws just don’t eat much. They only eat at meal time and they don’t cook much. no snacks or cookies or anything like that in their house. I used to take food with me when I went to visit. Now I’m pretty good at avoiding their house.

I would tell these friends that we don't eat like that. Then, I'd ask them if it's okay for me to run to the some stores to get us some food/drink that we like. If they say no, then I'd tell them, "Well, together, we have to come up with a solution." Then, we'd work it out.

One subject many Americans just simply won't discuss, is how much food we do NOT need. I like to eat as much as anyone, but I just spent a couple weeks with the flu and couldn't, and have lost a lot of weight. I've thought about this for years. Portion size is out of control and........one day this just dawned on me..........if you are working an office job or just non-manual labor........you really don't need breakfast. It's actually probably best to keep your fast going until lunch, and just skip the calories.

Now if I'm doing active physical stuff in the day......and especially if it's prepared for me.......I'm going to eat breakfast. But just regular routine? Don't need it.

The various nut/oat milks are among the biggest scams going.
If you get the unsweetened kind, it's just water and almonds. How the 17 is that a scam?

Don't get me wrong, I drink the shlt out of regular, whole milk. But I've put some almond milk in a shake before. I don't really see a problem with it.

We literally went to similar friends house this weekend. I'm polite enough to accept what they give me, BUT, back in my room or vehicle in a small suitcase and cooler, is ALWAYS my normal stuff, beer, string cheese, chocolate chip granola bars Goldfish, chips & salsa, etc etc. Easy compromise for me for a few days to see good friends

I’m sure others feel this way maybe but when we have people staying with us or hosting someone we try to find out what THEY like (or don’t like) to eat and go from there.
I can’t imagine any of my friends not taking this approach. Maybe they don’t really want them to visit.

since this is six pack, I assume the OP is sporting the typical sixpack bod and this is hte hosts’ subtle way of screaming to the OP “eat some vegetables every once in a while you 17ing fat 17”.

My in-laws are somewhat like that but they are aware that we don't eat like them and usually make accommodations for us.

You can always offer to take them out to dinner or lunch. It could get expensive but it is the price you have to pay.

This, as a host I believe it is incumbent on you to make your guest feel welcome, this would include food for them (with in reason of course)

Yeah, it’s a really odd situation. They’re a great family, and I honestly don’t think there’s anything we could do to offend them, but it just feels weird having to bring 3 bags of groceries to someone’s house because they won’t even keep an f’n granola bar in their house.

On New Year’s Day, they said that we’d do takeout from Soul Fish so that no one would have to cook(completely fine). But just when I thought we were about to throw down on some catfish and hush puppies, the wife got a sweet potato and the husband ate the Cajun cabbage. We then got the whole “omg, I’ve got to get back to my normal diet” spiel the next day. She must’ve splurged on a couple saltines when we weren’t looking
