We just got back from spending a few days with friends in Memphis, and we always have a great time, but good lord do they eat healthy. Breakfast is protein shakes, lunch is carrots and hummus, and dinner is salad. No one drinks anything but water, and goat cheese on pita chips is considered a splurge.

Do y’all know people like this? If so, do you just go shopping once you get there? Then, when they say they’re making salads for dinner, is it ok to order pizza?
I don't know why it would be expected to eat like they do. If they take blood pressure medicine should you? If they smoke, does that mean you need to smoke? This is one of those be upfront and don't try to step on egg shells. My sister-in-law just hosted family Christmas and she doesn't do sugar or bacon. She had us cook the bacon outside on the blackstone because she doesn't want it cooked in her house. So find out what is reasonable and do that. Not communicating is the problem.

One subject many Americans just simply won't discuss, is how much food we do NOT need. I like to eat as much as anyone, but I just spent a couple weeks with the flu and couldn't, and have lost a lot of weight. I've thought about this for years. Portion size is out of control and........one day this just dawned on me..........if you are working an office job or just non-manual labor........you really don't need breakfast. It's actually probably best to keep your fast going until lunch, and just skip the calories.

Now if I'm doing active physical stuff in the day......and especially if it's prepared for me.......I'm going to eat breakfast. But just regular routine? Don't need it.
I started fasting to help lose weight. I do two 24 hour fasts per week. I am getting ready to attempt a week-long fast. I have lost roughly 15-20 pounds in about 2 months, and I am not eating as much when I do eat.

Show up with a sack of 5 guys and tell Cindy Loo she neeeds a cheeseburger she’s looking frail
When husband chimes in about their relationship with food now, tell him the soy boy you care for him - that’s why you got him a double with bacon since he’s looking and acting low T

My oldest brother's family is like that to a degree. No butter, flour or dairy, instead its ghee, arrowroot, flaxseed, and cashew milk.

Every now and then they can cook something semi decent but most of the time everything tastes like punishment.
To be fair, ghee is butter. Clarified to remove the milk fat, but it's still butter. Fantastic for searing steaks!

man, we spent 12 days with my in laws in Pittsburgh....SIL, BIL and 3 nieces....3 of the 5 have Celiac disease and are all gluten free...it didnt help much that my SIL is already a health nut....everything is GF and Organic....they do ALL of their grocery shopping at whole foods....SIL told my wife that their grocery bill each month is 4-5K....most expensive food from the most expensive grocery store....She said she spent 2K 3 days before Xmas for all the family....naturally my kids were saying there was 'nothing to eat' by the day after xmas....

True, and that's probably the one thing I listed that I actually do like. I just don't like it enough to pay extra for it. I'll stick with my sticks of unsalted, please and thank you.

Eat their stuff first night. Then get up, take a mighty dump and leave door open and say that food last night caused the smell. That should free you from Kashi hell.

Whole Foods is one giant scam. So is organic food.

You probably don't have the strength to eat after a week-long fast. **

Pro tip - You can make it yourself at home. Put your standard butter in a pot on the stove over low heat. As the butter melts, it'll separate (milk fats will float or sink depending on whether you use salted or unsalted butter). Pour off the clarified butter and throw away the milk fat. The clarified butter will be good in the refrigerator for MONTHS. We keep ours in a square Tupperware dish and cut off pieces as we need it.

During the week-long fast, will you still snort bucks, or is that off the table too?

I want to try this, but just don’t think I would be successful. Do you drink water only or any liquids? How did you get started.

I’ve been losing a little weight by eating a good lunch and trying to skip dinner. I will snack a little in the evening but it is difficult.

any suggestions would be appreciated.

I drink water and coffee with as little creamer as I can get by with (that’s my cheat). I tried to choose my days where it would be easier to fast. I do Tuesday and Thursday. My wife has bible study Tuesday night, so nobody else is at home, so that one’s pretty easy. Thursday can be tougher if she’s cooking. Water helps. I try to drink a lot of water when I get hungry.

I fasted for 4 yrs (18-20 hrs a day) 6 days a week......Felt great, had plenty of energy and slept soundly every night. Two yrs ago, I moved to NOLA, quit fasting and going to the gym. It's been fun down here but it's come at a cost. I'm taking this month to work my way up to 18-20 hr fasts.

Start by trying to fast for 10hrs. Eat a healthy lunch, some mixed nuts in the afternoon if you feel you need something to carry you till dinner. Eat a healthy dinner (by 6pm if possible) and then drink water at night when the hunger pangs hit. No coffee unless it's straight black. Even in the smallest amounts, creamer, sugar, Splenda, etc. will break a fast. Wake up in the morning and if it's been 10 hrs and you're hungry then eat but if you can push yourself to hold off for 11-12 hrs then do it. Just progress from there. After a while, you'll get to where you'll wake up in the morning and not be hungry. You'll be at 16 hrs before you know it then 18. Lunchtime and dinner with something healthy in the afternoon then you're set.

The key, early on, is to not break fast when the pangs hit.

Thanks. I don’t eat breakfast and only drink black coffee. Eat a decent lunch and a snack in the afternoon at work. Dinner is where I have problems. I try to eat just a snack. That doesn’t satisfy me so I have another, and then another, etc. I’m actually trying to do intermittent fasting with only eating 12-8, but usually snack longer past 8:00.

12 days with you in laws! I can’t even spend that with my own family. Why not just kill yourself instead? You’d be happier.

Have you considered establishing dominance by sleeping with the wife? A man that eats like this should be taught a lesson.

What is your basis for saying this? Do you know of any reputable research that supports this position? I ask because I'd like to get my wife to read it. She does lots of shopping at Whole Foods and only buys "organic" food/drink.

Years of experience in agriculture and I have several friends across the country that farm with organic methods. The biggest misconception is that organic farming doesn’t use pesticides which is not even remotely accurate. Also with organics there’s no threshold for how much they can use it and how often they can apply it. Also organic farming takes a massive amount of tillage which requires alot more fuel and also increases erosion risks so saying that organic is environmentally sustainable is just not the case. Here’s the bottom line from me personally: the food you buy in the United States is safe to eat no matter what ways it was produced. Don’t get caught up in the hype of the fearmongering that goes on especially on social media media. To me it’s just marketing to take more of your money with little to no added benefit.

So here’s a comprehensive review of numerous studies of conventional vs organic food. It’s pretty long but very thorough.

The TLDR summary:

Based on the findings of our data synthesis, we can conclude that.

  • a.
It was not possible to identify a generalized superiority of organic foods over conventional ones, nor of conventional foods over organics.
  • b.
Superiority claims can only be made for specific comparisons, depending on the food and the nutritional or residual parameter.
  • c.
A particular organic food may be superior in a given nutrient or residue and inferior in another compared to its conventional equivalent.
  • d.
Specific organic foods may also have a higher content of certain heavy metals than their conventional counterpart.

Can’t help much, people like that won’t associate with me.
But an area with a little crossover: my in-laws just don’t eat much. They only eat at meal time and they don’t cook much. no snacks or cookies or anything like that in their house. I used to take food with me when I went to visit. Now I’m pretty good at avoiding their house.
This is my in-laws as well, except they only eat one meal a day, and they like it to be at 4 pm. Granted, I could stand to skip the calories and do it while staying there, but if you expect my kid to go from 7 AM to 4 PM without any food then you get to be the one to deal with them when the hanger sets in.
