Ok. Not a gamer here at all but kind of want to buy a PS. Haven't had one since the first xbox but now have a teenage kid that is showing a little bit of interest and has gotten me to think I want to play a little bit too.

Mostly would also like the streaming capabilities.

I know that the PS4 has a lot better graphics and all but is it really worth the extra money that I would spend over a PS3?

PS4. No question.

Definitely get the PS4. There are some pretty good bundle options out there right now, plus they will stop making games for the PS3 (maybe they already have).

Now is probably the best time to jump in on the next generation. If this was last year I would've said PS3, but now the right move is PS4.

I've never played the PS4 and very rarely play anything any more, but CookieMonster is right. Prices have dropped on the latest Gen and it's a good time to pull the trigger and jump in.

I guess it depends on what you're really wanting to get out of it.

While I never had a PS3, it's a great system with a TON of great games. Better yet, you can get both it and most of their blockbuster games for dirt cheap now. The downside, though, is that while Sony is still somewhat supporting it today, the cord will pretty much be cut in 2015.

With the PS4, you've obviously got a much more powerful machine and all of the focus will be on it for the foreseeable future as far new games and updates go, but you're also talking a lot more $$$

You won't go wrong either way, but I guess I'd have to recommend the PS4. With the other machine, you'd have to plenty to play, but I doubt your kid will be thrilled when all his friends are playing whatever new game happens to be but there isn't a PS3 version of it. I'm pretty sure that streaming options(Netflix, Hulu, ESPN) are comparable on both systems.

I disagree with all these posters.

Nothing on the PS4 or Xbox One yet to justify a purchase. It you HAVE to get either a PS3 or PS4 this Christmas then the obvious answer is PS4. The smart move is to get a WiiU this Christmas (there are some incredible bundles). WiiU blows the others away in the games department right now. Next Christmas will be the time to get a PS4. A system is only as good as its games.

I'm looking to buy a system as well

Thanks for the thread. What system would be best for 2 ten year old boys?

Wii U is where its at. Smash Brothers all day. Guess you really need to be a die hard Nintendo person to appreciate it though

I'm hoping to get enough GameStop GC from family and trade in my PS3 for an Xbox One. As far as the original question, gotta go with the next gen.

I just got an xbox one and still have my 360. The graphics are great and the homepage additions are pretty neat but it's still too soon into the generation for there to be a big gap. As far as games go, they'll finally start pouring in this coming year. So far it's mostly been games that are supported by both generations but soon makers will just start focusing on the new consoles. That's when we'll start getting the most out of it.

I'd love to have a wii u just for the sake of Zelda and Mario Cart.

Ps4. In a year, the ps3 will be obselete. Also, the question was asked about 2 ten year old boys. For small children, I would recommend the WiiU, but 10 years old is getting at the age where they will want something else. Btw, from an earlier post, this is something you don't hear everyday: "but CookieMonster is right."

Definitely better to get the latest system if you are just starting out because most all the new games will be coming out for the newest system. I have the PS3 and used to have the PS2 but I keep noticing that, for the most part, as the graphics and realism of the games keep getting better the stories and gameplay seem to keep getting worse. Call of Duty is an example where the early games had great stories and gameplay but now its yuck.

Well if it's for you and your kid, then I could maybe see the WiiU argument but your kid is probably going to want to play Destiny, COD, FIFA, Madden with his friends. WiiU's alleged game advantage is going to disappear in less than a month. Not to mention PS4 is backwards compatible. So you can play NCAA 14 on it. Doesn't look like they'll make another one of those for a while.

Long story short: WiiU is a niche console for kids who don't play shooters or sports games. It's great at what it does but has serious limitations. I love Smash & Mario Kart but even they get old.

They will love either. Find out which ones their buddies have- that way your kids can play online with them.

PS4 is not backwards compatible.

But you're right, the Wii U is a niche device. Get Wii U to play Mario, get PS4 to play all the big name games.

Lou is right. PS4 isn't backwards compatible. It's got the option to stream old games but you can't just stick a PS3 disc in and play it.

Currently, I have the following gaming systems:
PS2
PS3
PS4
Xbox Kinect

I was a Sony guy through the PS3 and then made the switch to Xbox at the release of Black Ops 1....online experience at the time was far superior on Xbox than Sony Network because at the time Sony was free to play so it didn't get the support needed...needless to say...I made the switch back to Sony after my brother tested it out for a period of time...so far online is on par with Xbox...Destiny and Advanced Warfare are my only games...next up is FIFA and Madden

Btw, Im still pissed at that Belmont girl I dated that sold my vintage Atari like Original Nintendo and 40 games while I was off co-oping ...

Get the PS4. It is the way of the future. Playstation is about to become dominant. If you think you made a mistake, in 6 months, you should be able to sell it for at least half what you pay now.

Whats the trade in value on the last gen systems? I have two 360's and a PS3 I wouldn't mind offloading if it would get me closer to getting a next gen.

I own or have owned the following: Intellivision, Nintendo, Sega Genesis, Nintendo 64, GameCube, Wii, WiiU, Gameboy Advance, PS, PS2, PS3, Xbox, Xbox 360, and Xbox One. I will likely own a PS4 soon...

I never play/played shooter or sports games, and still wouldn't get a WiiU

Those aren't the only things you're missing out on - pretty much major AA (Including all big RPGs, action/adventure games) come out for PS4/XB1/PC. With WiiU, you're getting Mario Kart, Smash Brothers, and Zelda games.

Got a used PS3 for $100. 1 yr old. Come with 2 controllers, 3 games, & hdmi cable. Buddy was in a tight spot. Now what games do some of you recommend for 10 year old boys & for a 40 year old?

As someone that doesn't like 1st person shooters, the Batman Arkham series. may be a little too adult for a 10yr old, probably PG13. God of War series. off PSN, Tokyo Jungle.

Kids are going retro with Mine Craft. These high powered graphics cards

in the newer consoles are becoming obsolete because I'm pretty sure you can run Mine Craft on an Intel Celeron.
