and wondering what`s in them when worn by some people ? I`ve got to confess that I am. I`ve never given any thought to what can be concealed in those things. Oh for the innocence of by gone days.

Only if they look ... suspicious ... such as the type person one would glean from mental profiling .... Presumably that's what you mean by "some people".

No I'm not. 1 in 100,000,000 Americans have been killed on American soil by backpack explosives. Care to guess what that ratio is for guns, the flu, car crashes, cheeseburgers, stress induced heart attacks? I don't live my life in fear of the unknown, like W said if I did they win.

I wont notice backpacks any more than I even have.

And after that freak with the shoe bomb, I continued to not notice shoes any more than I ever did before.
If I were hyper vigilant to everything that looked like something people have used in the past to store or hide weapons, I would be consumed with it and fail to function in my daily life.

Seriously- duffel bags, briefcases, shoes, backpacks, etc etc etc.

If you're a college student, I think you'd go crazy watching all the backpacks. There are thousands of them on campus. And they sag under the weight of the books ....

I got that but the fact remains that these to guys were able to place 2 bombs exactly where they wanted them in broad daylight in the midst of thousands of people because of those innocent backpacks. You can`t just ignore that.

So you watching backpacks more closely is going to make you safer? What if they change to briefcases? Unfortunately, the innocence you speak of didn't just get blown away in Boston. It began melting away in the 60s, eroded more in the 70s, hemorrhaged in the 80s, bled out in the 90s and received a kill shot on Sept. 11, 2001.

I will notice them in the same way Juan Williams notices mid-easterners boarding an airplane that he happens to be flying on. It`s not going to change my life but I will be more aware of people carrying full backpacks who look out of place.

I`m talking specifically about backpacks. Please don`t attempt to over complicate this. I`ll assure you backpacks are about to receive a lot more attention by law enforcement than they used to as a means to transport bad things.

I'm not trying to over complicate it. Just saying that we haven't had innocence since the 1950s, so what happened in Boston, while tragic, is no worse than a whole litany of other things that have happened on our soil in the last 40-50 years.

And are you suggesting law enforcement had never thought of backpacks as a means to transport a bomb before?? It's been used before and will be used again. Feel free to worry yourself to death over backpacks though. Personally I think you're way overreacting.

Naturally, it'll cross the mind if I see someone put a backpack down and walk away from it. But after a while I'll go back to not paying attention again. Where this affects me a little is that I was in the market for a pressure cooker. Right now, you couldn't get within 100 yards of me with a pressure cooker.

Just like after a psycho tried to use his shoes as a bomb, shoes received a lot of attention. A lot of attention and stupid reactionary measures to help calm everyone and assure such a thing wouldnt happen again.

You are doing to backpacks what TSA did to shoes.

Its a backpack. Backpacks arent out of the ordinary in a city. Backpacks arent out of the ordinary at a marathon. Hell, one of my coworkers received a backpack for running in a marathon a couple years ago.

If someone puts the backpack down and walks away, thatd be odd. If someone randomly takes a backpack off and dumps it in a trash can, thatd be odd.
But those things would have been odd before this attack too. Nothing different now.

And I know you dont want to bring briefcases into this and you only want to talk about backpacks, but why? The greater point is things that are commonplace yet easily conceal a weapon.

Why don`t Google "ban backpacks" in the news section and see if it`s only me "overreacting" and get back to me on it.

Just Google-News "ban backpacks" and see what`s about to happen at least near term around the country. I know my awareness will go up whether anyone else` does or not. Didn`t mean to offend anyone with my observation.

I have no doubt that it's more people than you, lots of them. It's still overreacting.

Yep, if backpas are banned around the country, it will only further highlight the absurd reactionary policies I hit on when I mentioned the TSA and shoes. Everyone take your shoes off to make sure nobody is hiding a bomb. Ok, its been long enough since the incident, so everyone can now keep their shoes on.

Same thing here if what you are saying actually happens. Its dumb. But America as a collective is dumb. Dumb and in need of false comfort, so lets ban whatever was recently used to transport a bomb. Thatll work, the evil guys will never figure out a different way to transport their bomb!

Yea I read a study last night that talked about the effects of heavy backpacks on young children's postures, especially young girls. Sometimes their books are just too heavy.

Oh wait, you're talking about them because of bombs? In that case no. You really think that someone just thought of hiding something in a backpack this week? Theyve been useful for years. Don't overreact.

Shoes are very useful also but I have to take mine off and get them x-rayed every time I get on a plane. Put your head in the sand as deeply as you want but letting people have access just about any venue unchecked with large backpacks is about to come to screeching halt. Deal with it bro.

You just changed your argument. I absolutely think backpacks should be checked when going into sporting events, airports and what not. They already do that. I'm just not gonna freak out when I see someone with a backpack.

Only if they're Caucasian like these guys were.

Obviously I mean from the Caucasus Mountains region.

Just a difference of opinion. I don't doubt what you're saying. And I'll be ok with whatever happens regarding backpacks. Just think it's an overreaction.

Did you see my post earlier. Not trying to start that up again, but I didn't get a chance to give you the link.

No, dont go overboard and extreme, it isnt like that.

Having security is vital. Its the extra step that was put in place as a reaction and then eventually removed that was dumb.
Having security that can xray baggage and check for metal is fine. Taking shoes off just because a crazy put a bomb in his shoes is dumb.

If it isnt shoes, then its underwear like that Umar guy. If it isnt a backpack, then its a briefcase. If it isnt a briefcase, then its a duffelbag. If it isnt a duffelbag, then its one of those dumb tiny nylong bags with the thin strings that cool hip kids use.

It absolutely sucks that people hold such little regard for life. Its unfortunate, but I choose to be aware of the dbags and live my life, instead of focusing on the dbags and supporing useless rules that are reactionary in nature.

Well, for one thing ... you might not want to go into a store any time soon and buy one. You might be put on a list. And second, those things don't seem to hold up very well anyway ....

I don't disagree with you. I don't see many backpacks on the streets around here, except for little kids going to school. So if I see someone wearing one next time I go to a Target or whatever, I might give it a second glance.

Backpacks have already been banned from most sporting events and large bags or containers searched. I think that you will see more attention to backpacks and other items left unattended, much like is done in airport terminals.

How? 50% of people in airports and city streets have one it seems

I know I always travel with one. It's my carry on, keep my laptop and some essentials in it.

So guns kill a thousand times more than backpacks this year, are you advocating banning guns. Google Obama G, you know what comes up, Obama Gay 4th. Using google searches to justify an argument is like using a message board to predict who you're next basketball coach is.

You ought to call these folks and enlighten them

Fans at next week’s Penn Relays, who sometimes come prepared to change clothes and go for a run of their own at any moment, will no longer be back to able to bring backpacks into the Relays venue, Franklin Field in Philadelphia
