when I hear people talk about having a french press they go on and on about them. Do they make coffee that much better? Is the process worth it? Is there a certain brand or style that is better than another?

My wife loves her coffee more than anything except our children and there are days that its a toss up. So I was thinking about getting her one for mother's day,you know because you have to buy your wife a mother's day gift even though she is not your mother.

In answer to your question, the difference between a cheapo coffee maker you buy at WalMart and the coffee you get out of a French press is the temperature of the water. Boiling water like you would use ina French press makes the coffee taste different (better).

The downside is that a French press is a pain to clean. Plus if you like several cups of coffee in the AM the French press isn't perfect because you either have to brew it twice with a small French press or get a massive French press and your second or third cup of coffee ends up cool.

Technivorm isa varietyof coffee maker that has a completely different (*** kicker) heating element. It heats the water really fast and uniformly up to whatever the magic temp is for optimal coffee.

We drink a good bit of coffee at our house and got one of these a while back on Ebay. We have been very pleased. The coffee maker looks kind of weird like a sciencefair experiment or whatever, but it brews good coffee. It is stupid expensive for what you ought to ever pay for a coffee maker, but then who ever thought you shouldpay 5K for a lawn mower and I bet there are a lot of folks reading this right now with ExmarkandJohn Deere Mowers that paidmore than that for their mowers.

Good luck.

I've owned a Bunn but gave it to parents...mistake but a good mistake.

I would stay away from the Mr Coffees and the likes....cheap parts....cheap outcome

about a french press, not to replace the everyday coffee maker but for special coffee times on the week-end and mother's day kind of slipped up on me.

I take it every time we go camping/deer hunting. Not a pain to clean once you get the hang of it. I got mine at Williams-Sanoma store for about $25.

I'm a huge fan of the all-in-one espresso machines. They are kinda expensive and definitely havedurability issues (the price you pay for high-pressure devices) but the espresso is amazing. I have the Delonghi Magnifica and I use it daily. Just really beats the hell out of coffee.
