This sucks. I finally got the chance to see Soundgarden play just the other night. I was a young Marine stationed up near Seattle in the early 90's when that scene was huge. Chris Cornell was the lead singer that every other rocker wanted to be in terms of pipes. Dude could shake the Earth with his giant vocals. I'm just glad I got to see him perform live. R.I.P. Chris. 52 is much too young to die.

Yeah. Woke up to hearing his passing. Pretty bummed. It's awesome that you got to see them live. I saw them in '98. You're right, he had an amazing voice.

Saw his solo band at Stir back around 2009. Great show. Did songs from throughout his career. One hell of a voice. Same age as myself. Makes you think about life.

Awful news. :( One of my favorites that I never got the chance to hear live. Sounds like suicide. Very sad. I have over 20 boots of SG and Chris' solo work if anyone is interested.

Nirvana
Alice In Chains
Stone Temple Pilots
Soundgarden

The early 90's has taken a big hit. I hope that Eddie Vedder is happy.

Bummer. Even though I'm not much of a fan of Soundgarden, or the grunge scene much at all...because so many rotten post-grunge bands arose from it, 52 is far too early. RIP.

Don't forget Blind Mellon's Shannon Hoon. Also, I think PJ already took their hit before anyone. Their Original lead singer Andrew Wood died, thus giving Eddie Vedder the job of lead Vocals.

They say Neil Young is the grandfather of grunge music. Well, I can't help thinking of the song "Out of the Blue" by NY & the Lyric

It's better to burn out
Than to fade away
My my, hey hey.

Hate to hear this. Always wanted to scream like Chris Cornell. Never get tired of the Badmotorfinger or Superunknown albums.

Mother Love Bone was a precursor to Pearl Jam, but not the same band sans Vedder. I don't think that I would consider MLB on the same level as the others. However, I did enjoy their music and have a lot of their music. Crown of Thorns is a great song.

Chris Cornell and Andrew Wood were roommates for a while. Cornell wrote Say Hello 2 Heaven in Woods honor. The Temple Of The Dog album was a collaboration of Soundgarden and Pearl Jam, with Eddie Vedder lending his vocals to Hunger Strike. In fact, Temple Of The Dog was a lyric from a MLB song.

I was reading a great Cornell story this morning. He had a small part in the movie Singles, which had a ton of Seattle bands and an awesome soundtrack. There is a part in the movie where Matt Dylan's character makes this great mixtape for his girlfriend. Jeff Ament of Pearl Jam even designed the cover for this fictional mixtape. He put a bunch of weird song titles (including Spoonman) on it and that was thought to be the end of it. A few weeks later Nancy Wilson tells her then husband Cameron Crowe she found some dude selling this mix tape on the streets of Seattle. It had actual songs on it that were all written and recorded by Chris Cornell. One even made it on the soundtrack.

Love all this stuff. Wish I could have seen any of them. I considered it "new" music as the vast majority of my concert going days took place in the 80s. However, by the time this wave of (great) music came out I was serving in the U.S. Navy and concerts just weren't the priority that they were when I was younger. I did know that my younger shipmates did attend many of those shows while we were in port. When I was living on that ship I remember repurchasing Alice In Chain's Dirt, Pearl Jam's Ten, Singles soundtrack as well as Nirvana's Incesticide on cassette, as that was my portable music player at the time. I soon after got a discman and got Stone Temple Pilots' Core, Mother Love Bone's Mother Love Bone compilation album, Soundgarden's Badmotorfinger and Pearl Jam's Vs on CD.

BREAKING NEWS: Chris hung himself!

Your correct. I meant to say PJ was basically a by-product of MLB. Veddar was working as a security guard who was a big fan of MLB when Woods died. He wanted to replace Wood but (as I am sure you know) sounds nothing like Wood. So they rethought the whole band & became Mookie Blaylock, then were forced to change to PJ.

Woods death & Ian Curtis' death are similar in the sense that they died before "their scene" popped off but both are legends.

Anyways this is all very sad. Sooo too many musicians from the 90's are dead. All the grunge guys of course & don't forget about all the hip-hop guys too (tupac, Biggie, EZ, & Nate Dogg).

And basically all of them died for stupid reasons.

I find Neil Young more so one of the early contributors to Americana/alt. country. Well, Neil Young, Gram Parsons, and believe it or not, Michael Nesmith.

Saw Cornell for the first time with Temple of the Dog in San Francisco during their quick tour last fall. He was a powerhouse of a vocalist and entertainer. Sad that the TOTD album was recorded as a tribute to Andrew Wood, led by Chris.

We need to store Eddie V in Ft Knox for safe keeping....

I could see that about Neil Young. I think when people say "grandfather of grunge" they are thinking "keep on rockin in the freeworld" & "cinnamon girl" style.

But your dead on about Gram Parsons. Another artist that dead too soon.

So sad. I'm very sorry to hear another music icon couldn't get the help he so greatly needed. Just awful..

Yeah, Gram Parsons was a gem. Love his stuff.

If you listen to the Jayhawks "Waiting For the Sun," it has Neil Young's fingerprints all over it..

It was a very unique musical era, compounded by it being my college years ('92-'96). It also make me nostalgic for 101.9 The Edge. I was kind of devastated when 101.9 signed off by playing "It's the end of the world as we know it" on a loop. I blame the Backstreet Boys for all of this.

We just lost our local rock station so they could play the same crap on all the other stations.

101.9 The Edge
Yes the Edge!
I am pretty bummed myself, I didn't care about Bowie or Prince but this Cornell passing gets me down.
Really wasn't upset about Weiland but for some reason this is very sad to me.
Epic voice. RIP CC

I'd be suprised if he meant to kill himself.
It sounds like he hung himself. I suspect he did mean to. I read today his current wife was very controlling and always on the hunt for a rich guy before she found him. She was the one who sent a friend to check on him. I suspect she had a conversation with him before he did what he did. LP hung himself on purpose at ground level. Cornell was found on the floor. I am guessing he did a similar technique.

I thought cornell should have took the AC/DC job before axle rose. he could probably do bon scott and brian johnson's tunes a bit better.

Perhaps he had been planning this for a while and decided it was time. The very last song they performed was a Led Zeppelin/old blues standard "In my time of dying"

In my time of dying, want nobody to mourn
All I want for you to do is take my body home

Well, well, well, so I can die easy [X2]

Jesus, gonna make up my dyin' bed.
Meet me, Jesus, meet me. Meet me in the middle of the air
If my wings should fail me, Lord. Please meet me with another pair
