To be honest, I have quality scotch on many occasions but it was always on my boss' tab. I know its a lame issue but would rather get crucified here rather than get a look from the waitress.

So, out of pure curiosity, what does a Macallen 12 or 18 cost in a restaurant or bar?

It is my favorite by far. RcD has sampled some of mine. It is also the highest rated Single Malt Scotch by professional Scotch testers, with the 16 year old coming it at a robust rating of 94. Laphroaig is rated 91. It comes in 16 year old, for the proletariat, and 30 year old for the bourgeoisie's upper 1%. It is $64 for a fifth at Corky's in Starkville and $80 for a fifth at Brewski's bottle store. That kind of tells you where to shop in Starkville...

Islay Single Malt Scotch is very peaty and intense. I drink Lagavulin in a brandy sniffer neat.

You need a quality scotch, most likely with splash of water or some ice - melted a little. The little bit of water takes the heat off and makes the flavor pop.

As long as it is fairly large & square. Large surface area, & slow to melt. One "Scotch Ball" (large spherical ice cube made with a copper press) can be nice as well if you absolutely must have ice.

bottle of Lagavulin 1991 for Christmas. ItIs Simply Awesome. I've been rationing myself. I'm down to about two more small glasses of the sizeI drink. It's going to be a sad day when that bottle is empty. Needless to say I won't be buying another one anytime soon.

(white dog/white lightnin'/moonshine/corn whiskey/etc.) if you take a tour of Maker's Mark, you get a sample of it (and the regular stuff) at the end. While I'm sure this isn't a ringing endorsement for their product: it made a lady yack when she had her shot.

My first thought after tasting it was that it tasted like it was just filtered through peat. Good, but I probably will go with the 12 or 18 year next time instead of the 10. I'm curious about Lagavulin now. It has glowing reviews and I hope to get a bottle of it soon. I might pick up a bottle when I'm in Florida in a couple weeks, depending on the price.

Laphroaig 10. It's in the price range I can buy every now and then and I love the peat taste. I agree with the above poster about cutting scotch with room temp water. That is the way it is meant to be drunk. That goes triple for the Laphroaig. I use about double the amount of water I use for most other scotch. I sailed through the Isles last summer, the Islays remind me of that, one of the most beautiful places I've ever been in my life.
