My first thought was "I never imagined a state where so many people moan and groan about nearly anything were happy in their misery".

I think NJ would be pretty close to perfect if the property taxes and income taxes were half of what they are.
We have it all. We have beautiful beaches, some with boardwalks and attractions. We still have lots of open space and place to hike, horseback ride and mountain bike. We have the Pine Barrens, a natural wonder. We have proximity to two of the largest cities with endless entertainment and cultural options. We have an outstanding selection of restaurants and food. Every place has problems and things to complain about. NJ people are vocal, and some consider that a plus. Are we complaining or observing? Having lived in several other states, we always came back to NJ. There are may reasons for that. As I put it when younger-because all the other places we lived just plain sucked.
As long as you don't live ANYWHERE near the cities, crime and riffraff it's great!!
NJ has among the least crime in the country. Even places like Camden are much safer than they once were.

Oh right, they send Biff to University of Tampa, but then some weird family thing happens and they all end up living in NJ until happily ever after. BUT for that they totally would have left!
Also, it's outrageous how much taxes are in NJ and that you have to pay for the beach but we're going to celebrating Olivia graduating from Coastal Carolina with her degree in underwater basketweaving for which we paid full freight and need tips on the best snorkeling in the Maldives. Oh and we can't afford RU concession prices!
You saw my answer, we like it here. We are not guilty and guilty on your scenario with two kids going in different directions for college.
IMO, one thing (taxes) has nothing to do with the other (where parents/kids choose to go to college and the cost) especially considering how the NJ Budget does not allocate a lot to support the State Universities.
Considering the people you continually elect to office, that is an unrealizable pipe dream…buttons nice to have dreams even of unreachable
You mentioned how self loathing NJ people are in the other college thread and I laughed. Maybe it’s a rural/suburban thing because I didn’t see that in my part of NJ. This #2 ranking doesn’t surprise me at all.
Also, message boards are made for complaining, they’re a terrible place to measure how the general public feel about things.

My overarching point was on this board, not you, but others, will plead poverty out one side of their mouth and the other asking questions like they're sitting on a fortune.
I think most people would agree NJ (and the tri state area) is full of self loathers. Maybe in SJ it's less.
Would rather that than much of Memphis or NOLA many other cities at night.
Not to mention, most NJ cities and the state as a whole are among the safest in the entire country.
If you're scared in NJ you can't get out of your cul de sac often.

I worked off of Perry Street in the 1980s. Back then it was scary. I have not reason to return and relive the old days, because I want to live in my old days.

You should spend some time in Hunterdon county. Most people would not agree there
Definitely less in South Jersey. Down there people pretty much accept who they are which are basically blue collar folks or rich Philadelphians who crossed the bridge to raise their kids in places like Haddonfield or Cherry Hill or Mount Laurel. Feel like the self loathing NJ folks are focused primarily in the North Jersey suburbs outside of NYC.

I've traveled a lot and lived for months at a time in several places and while I enjoyed all of those places, I can't imagine living anywhere other than NJ for all the reasons you stated (and including Rutgers/NB, of course). We used to have these one-page Powerpoint slides for our department at work, which served as an intro for others to see and mine had a line in it saying, "Born in Jersey, Will Die in Jersey," lol.
My buddy was a Trenton cop in the early 70's & Perry Street was one of the streets that the cops did not stop the patrol cars, at red lights after dark, very sketchy!!!
Chance of being a victim of violent crime in Trenton is 1 in 96
In NOLA it's 1 in 79

I live in Central Jersey and like it here. There are things in the state I would change but I still like it here for the most part.
