#2- a long, drawn out war.
The US was hoping and pushing for #2. We got what we wanted yet decided to punk out. There is nobody in the US that thought a Ukraine victory over Russia would be quick and easy. If we planned on bailing, we should have pushed for #1 from the start.

All this was negotiated beforehand and Zelensky blew it up publicly because he doesn't want this to end. He stays in power (unelected) and has pocketed lots of untraceable money given to him by Biden. Also, there are many other covert operations conducted under previous administrations in Ukraine to be uncovered which is another reason to blow up the deal and keep Trump from uncovering.
The minerals deal in itself provides ''protections'' which he keeps using as his ''excuse'' because with that deal the US taxpayer has a vested interest to protect those mineral rights instead of being the financier of free money.
