Going in August for 5 days. Couple of days of some work stuff and the rest for doing whatever.
Really want to play Torrey Pines South but for the cost and the ongoing renovation, don’t think it’s worth it so North Course is next option if I do decide to play.
Also, the Padres will be in town while I’m there.
Never been to SD but I’m sure some of the Pack have so what say ye?

SD is a great town. Couple thing you should to:

Tour the USS Midway

GasLamp Quarter downtown - lots of bars and restaurants

Go to Coronado

Mission Beach

San Diego Zoo and Balboa Park

Old Town San Diego — great Mexican restaurants.

Last time I was there we took a taxi ride to Tijuana at 3am and I ate a street taco.

I DO NOT RECOMMEND THESE ACTIONS.

You should never, under any circumstances, go to San Diego. You won’t want to leave.

I’ve heard there are other public course on the ocean

But are not famous because there is no PGA tournament on them. I’ve been told they are relatively cheap and just as picturesque. Have fun.

Play Torrey Pines if you get the chance. Either course. I highly recommend it.

SD's ballpark is awesome and it's right in the middle of downtown.

If you're going to a beach somewhere, go to La Jolla. Much better than the other beaches.

San Diego is a big town with a small town feel. The pace is nicer and people much more friendly than what you find up the road in LA.

go there every summer. will be there for two weeks next month. I always stay downtown near the gaslamp area. lot's of places to eat and lots of bars. San Diego has a lot breweries so check that out. Padres games are great. I've been to several. Some of the best baseball weather around and it's really accessible and lot of bars around to go to before and afterwards. Visit Serano's street tacos. really good tacos. Go to old town to Casa De Reyes and get the fajitas and pitchers of margaritas. Balboa Park is pretty cool with some of the museums and the zoo is close by to there. Coronado is also a pretty cool place for some beach time. Mission Bay is also pretty nice beach area. Too bad you won't be there in mid-July and could catch the OTL tournament. Little Italy has some good Italian food options. Hotels can be pricey down in downtown, but hotel circle out in mission valley is an easy trolley ride down to the downtown area. Royal India is some really good indian food buffet at lunch. TinFish has great fish tacos. Brian's 24 has great breakfast and open all night so if you want something good at 3am after night out. Couple of good irish pubs on 5th. Cold Beers and Cheeseburgers (name of a bar) great cheeseburgers. The pool at the hard rock is really nice. couple of my colleagues play golf, but i'm not sure which one they usually go to. Midway and other ships right there are pretty cool.

Coronado Brewery, Stone Brewery, and Ballast Point all in this area. There is list on this link and map too.

To add to Big Bully and Drebin:

First off, my reviews are from 15 years ago when I lived there. Now, to add to what were already great suggestions:

Go get a carne-asada burrito from El Cotixan #3 on Johnson Ave. in El Cajon. Make a split in it length-ways and throw in some pico. You can thank me later.

Drive up to Julian. Its about an hour outside of San Diego up in the mountains. Beautiful place.

If you go to Coronado, be aware that depending on the time of day, you may get stuck in bad *** traffic trying to get back across the bridge. Be prepared to take the Silver Strand south out of there just in case.

The Air and Space Museum at Balboa Park is excellent! There is also an extension to it at the airport in El Cajon. Even though I worked at that airport, for some reason I never went to the museum out there.

Nice bar: Kelly's Irish Pub in the Gas Lamp District. My neighbor was a doorman there and wore a tux to work (I never went there). Dive bar: Kelly's Irish Pub in El Cajon. One bouncer was a Hell's Angel from the local chapter. (My bar).

I'll call CoachNorm (who posts on here) tonight to see if he can add anything. He lives out there.

Little Italy is one of my favorite spots there.

I will probably eat at Herb and Wood and Cloak and Petal every time I go there. Cloak and Petal is an amazing sushi joint. Both are about a block from each other and within the same block is a great bar and restaurant called Born and Raised.

No, I do not know why all of those restaurants are "x and y" - it's an odd coincidence, but they are all great.

Book a time at The Noble Experiment as early as you can (you can do this online). It's a speakeasy with some really cool decor. Skulls on the walls and paintings on the ceiling. You enter through a false wall that looks like stacked kegs.

Lots of good breweries/brew pubs. I like Ballast Point.

Lots of cool rooftop bars...the one on the top of the Marriott has awesome views of Petco.

Everything Mjoelner said (I left SD in '02, so I'm also out of date).

I'll add: - My old hangout, Ye Old Plank Inn in Imperial Beach, just to say you've been there. It's billed as the most Southwesterly bar in the Continental U.S.

- The last remaining Anthony's Fish Grotto (in La Mesa). The original downtown location was the best, but it's sadly closed.

- Nightlife: either Downtown/Gaslamp District or Garnet Ave in Pacific Beach, but PB can be good starting at around noon onward, after the populace wakes up.

Lots of good info, like I knew The Pack would bring.
Sounds like I need another day or two to get it all in.
Thanks

It’s been many years since I was there and I was only 18yrs old. Word of caution! We were staying in the Mission Bay Area in a hotel across the road and two blocks from the board walk along the ocean side. Me and my brother-n-law not having ever been there before didn’t no the local laws. One evening he and I grabbed a tall boy beer and proceeded to cross the street and head up a back street to the board walk. Cops descended on us as if we were carry assault rifles. They made us spread across the hood of the patrol cars and frisked us down. Then began questioning us about where we from and what we thought we were doing. Finally one cop said that they generally arrest people for drinking in public. But since we were from Mississippi they let us off with a stern warning to not dink in public. I know we should of had it in cup!

The zoo is totally awesome. Mission Bay Area is really cool. Beach there was meh.

A long time ago I was walking on a San Diego side street off downtown looking for lunch. Walked around the corner and there was a blinking sign in a window saying Louisiana Fried Chicken. Well I couldn’t believe it and my buddy from Louisiana said hell no, it aint Popeyes. Wish we had cell cams.
