Any of you do the Google+? The "hangout" feature of Google+ could be an elitist form of always free chat...

It's not bad. Kind of buggy right now but for what they're doing it's pretty neat. Can only have 10 people max in it though

and so far I like it. They definitely have some things to work out but they will get there. As a photographer I just can't stomach Facebook because they take ownership of any picture you post, Google is not doing that (so far). The privacy settings on Google+ are also a lot stronger and pretty easy to understand/control. For me it's a matter of priorities. Google is wanting to get your opinion (+1's, same as the Like in Facebook) in order to improve search results (and I'm sure they will do some target ads) while Facebook's entire business model is sharing your personal data. I hope Google+ survives but it's a tough road to take down the Facebook.

It's not really so much about if it will take down Facebook because I think FB will be here for a little while at least. I think G+ is more so for the people who are tech savvy to a degree and/or trying to find something to get away from FB for whatever reason.

(and I mean I have not tried Google+)

...I like the concept of sharing things with groups of people instead of everybody you friend.

but I also don't want to create any more profiles on social networks. I rather buy a domain and put my personal profile on there and forward it to people instead of handing over all of my information to these companies. Except truthfully, I am sure Google could just recreate my life in 10 minutes if they felt like it. They have way too much information on me already.

currently trying to write a Facebook killer that you would like. Essentially they give you a formatted web site and handle linking and communication. But your data is yours! If you delete it it's gone for good. You have direct control over your database (assuming you understand MySql) and can handle the everything on your page. Will be interesting to see if they can ever bring it live and if it could catch on.

just because people go there to see their links to other people. I've been using Google+ for a few days but I still had to go in to Facebook this morning to see what was going on.I hope you are right and I am wrong, but I'm afraid only one can rule. MySpace certainly died a quick death.

I like using it still to check out different things, but not having ownership is my problem and something I didn't realize 6 years ago when I joined. I could do database tasks no problem, I have knowledge of SQL from previous work, but I rather just have my own everything. When I get some money together I will purchase a host and build my own personal profile, eventually get my own live server and do my work from there and not be spoon fed by these companies.

You can assign people to a list and then when you create a post, you can set individual posts so that they only appear to a specific list or lists (or even just to specific people). You can also set up posts so that certain people or lists CAN'T see it.

When you type a post, just click on the lock next to the share button and select Customize. Then, on the pull down menu next to These People, click on Specific People. If you have a list created, you can type in the name of the list and only the people in that list will see your post.

It all obviously takes a few steps - both creating lists to put people in and setting up parameters for specific posts - but it can be done.

and I cannot wait until it is. Something will take its place, and I will hate it, too. Instead of a few doing their gossip to those who listen they just put it out there in cyberspace where all can listen or in many cases watch. Truth does not matter anymore. To me, it is all a load of "stuff". Just leave it at that.

Since it has a following set up similar to Twitter, I can at least filter out a lot of the nonsense I don't care about and keep tabs on my friends I mainly associate with. I've slowly developed a hate for Facebook.
