First, you have to decideto quit. For you.<div>Second, put it down and don't pick it up again.</div><div>
</div><div>It's really that simple. Quit being a *****. Make a decision and follow through.</div>

But at some point you have to make the leap and just give up nicotine all together. It sucks but is doable.

1. use some substitute (I'd suggest taking a nicotene lozenge and putting it in the same place you dip)
2. get pissed about it and quit. If you arent mad at the money you spend on it or scared of losing half your face you wont quit.

Remember a couple of things. That **** stays in your system and you wont get it out for 3 months (or at least your brain will tell you that). I dipped for 17 years. It's much harder to quit than smoking because you are essentially putting it right into your bloodstream (think of what coccaine users do with the last bit).

KEEP a can in your glove compartment. Tell yourself not to use it. You have the power to go to the store and get it any time you want. If you can stay away from the can in your glove compartment, you can avoid the store.

Get your Ins agent to swab his partners mouth in the office who doesn't use tobacco and keep on spittin. Or at least that's what I did. It didn't help me much on the quitting.

I quit after I had a kid. get you some sunflower seeds and or peppermints. that helps the oral fixation part. Quitting dipping is one of the hardest things I ever did. If there's someone in your life that really wants you to quit, tell them and let them hold you accountable. One day at a time and after three days if you start back then you don't wanna quit.

Just quit at thanksgiving and I'm just now really over the craving. I chew gum religiously and always have some nuts or sunflower seeds. I'm good to go now. Just tell yourself you are going to quit and then do it.

I did that. After about three days the nicotine was out because I drank grapefruit juice and water and peed and peed. That was the physical side or physiological side. The mental side took about six weeks. Now I can't tolerate tobacco products in any form shape or smell. So it started with a real desire and followed through with a committment...that's it.

First, don't bother with the nicotine patch or lozenge unless you are just wanting to substitute having something in your mouth. The latest studies out on nicotine replacement basically says that they do not help at all with quitting. The studies show that people that quit with will power and those that try to quit with nicotine replacement have damn near the exact success rate.

I would suggest Chantix, you would continue to dip for the first 5-7 days and then stop dipping. It actually works by blocking the receptors in your brain from processing the nicotine. Even if you were to dip while taking it, you would receive zero pleasure from it.

Here is the biggest problem and it has been mentioned several times in post above. People misunderstand nicotine and cravings. Nicotine itself is out of your system or body within two weeks of stopping. Any craving after 2 weeks is strictly mental and has nothing to do with a chemical craving. Knowing that makes it much easier to quit because you can do damn near anything for 2 weeks and then you know that it is just mental or habit that you want a dip.

I would suggest taking Chantix but I would only take the morning pill each day instead of taking morning and night. I would also suggest anytime you have a craving that you drink a bottled water. I know it sounds crazy but it worked for me and has worked for several people i know.

Is this for Health or Life insurance? If it's for life insurance I know a couple carriers that will write you as Non-Tobacco for smokeless tobacco use.

Thought I could add something to the discussion but ya'll have covered the nicorette and sunflower seed angle. Only thing I would add is get the large container of atomic fire balls from Sam's club. Most the time it's just the need to feel like your doing something. The desire will eventually fade but there will still be times, when damn a dip would be good. I've only postponed the habit until a get the six months to live diagnosis.

inhalation is much faster than crossing a mucous membrane (think smoking crack versus snorting...or breathing for that matter)....The only faster way than inhalation is injecting ****. The difference isn't that great though, as its seconds(smoking) compared to minutes(dipping), but that's not the reason why dipping would be harder to quit than smoking. If dipping is, in fact, harder to quit than smoking, then its probably more along the lines that dip contains much more nicotine than cigs.... i saw a stat somewhere than a 2-can/week habit is essentially the same as a 1.5 pack/day smoker.... don't know if i quit believe that stat, but it's not quite out of the ball park. However, I'm fully confident in the stat that a good dip for 30+ minutes is well worth a handful of cigs.

BTW, i'm a dipper who quit for a while, but started back recently (stress and ****). The nicotine gum was/is a good substitute because you chew it up to release the nicotine and then essentially dip it (stuff it in your cheeks/gums). There's no sense of satisfaction that a good dip gives but it definitely curbs the craving.

theres nothing like feeling that nicotine flood your bloodstream, especially in the morning, or after a couple beers at night.

i cant imagine taking a long drive or sitting in a deer stand without a fat dip. it just settles you right down and gets you in a zone.

i owe a bachelor's and a master's degree to adderall and grizzly long cut wintergreen.

sometimes i get excited and get out of bed early so i can get that first dip on the way to work just as the sky is starting to get light.

i hope i live to be 85, so i can dip longer.

I dipped from age 11 until I was in my late twenties. I quit before graduating dental school. You need to practice what you preach, so I felt it was time to quit. I got cancer 10 years later. I lost 1/4 of my tongue from surgery. Squamous cell of the mouth is a bad *** cancer that will kill almost half who get it in the first five years. I had my tongue chopped on 5 times from biopsy and surgery. I would rather have you get a running start and kick me in the balls than have my tongue cut on again. I am very fortunate that I knew what was going on and detected my own cancer early. Most people don't and they get chopped up and irradiated if the cancer is more advanced. It's a miserable existence. Your mouth burns, you can't spit, your teeth then rot out, you can't swallow food, it spreads throughout your body, then you die. You may never get cancer from dipping, and I hope you don't. Your odds increase the longer you do it. Good luck with quitting.

well if what Dental Dawg said doesn't do it for my reason won't either but the reason I quit was for a cute blonde co-ed who objected. Have never looked back after stopping

b/w 2001 & 2002 I stopped for 6 months & I was a can a day dipper. I used medical help, can't remember the prescription I used, but it was easy b/c over 2 weeks I gradually decreased my dipping frequency as the med's kicked in in my system. At the end of the 2 weeks, the dip had none of the taste I enjoyed, & quitting ended up being easy. 6 months later, the old lady chewed me out for no reason, & i have been dipping ever since, but only a can every 2 days.

fast forward to today, & I want to stop so bad it's not even funny.....but it has become so second nature to me that it is like scratching my nuts in the morning.

I really don't want to loose my tongue or part of my face, so Ruckus, if you want to quit, I'll quit w/ you.......As of this post, I am done......just got to man up & do it, b/c the 2 year old that I busted my *** for this weekend to pull his birthday party together will need me to take him fishing !!!

Come on Ruckus, time to man up & do it.

PM me if you want to get in touch w/ each other & be held accountable</p>

Finally one day I had a sore in my mouth and just said it is time to stop having to worry about this crap. I have not really had that much of a problem. My problem was not the nicotine but the habit. My career did not affect it so I would do it all day during work. Having two kids was the real reason. I quit after the first was born but started again. It just has to hit you and if you really want to quit you will. It is not the drug but the habit.

I've done it for the last 8 years and like y'all have said its just a habit. There's so many things that I do that I routinely get a dip while doing it that makes it hard. I haven't got one since Thursday and today it's been all I can think about. Just gonna have to man up and stop. Sorry to hear about your story dental, hearing it from someone is reason enough to quit.

might as well be dipping. Not near the incidence of oral SCC (cancer) developed from dipping as with smoking. In fact, chronic alcohol abuse can lead to oral cancer about as easily as dipping can. Maybe try the brand Snus and see what you think (it's essentially pouches) and maybe wean off using that--a study done in Sweden in 1998 stated Snus had no risk for oral cancer. Some experts actually offer smokeless tobacco as an alternative to smoking because smoking is that much worse.
<div>
</div><div>Could use some sort of nicotine gum/patch/inhaler/lozenge/nasal spray. Another alternative is the electronic cigarette. Gives you a hit of nicotine without the risks--except you kinda look like a douche bag with one.</div><div>
</div><div>Or you could go the prescription medication route and think about something like Zyban or Chantix--I don't really care for the stuff though because of the huge list of side effects that goes with it--especially the one dealing with suicidal tendencies.</div>

It will help you with the habit. Although your cheek will get raw and your gums will get irritated after a weekand you will want to give that up too.

Pick one person you truly respect and would never lie to or betray. Could be wife, family member, friend, etc. Tell him you need him to help you quit. Promise this person you will give him $200 ever time you buy a new can of dip / bum a dip. If you are a man of your word it will be hell on you to lie. Do all of the other oral fixation tricks suggested in the thread and go from there.

It worked for my friend. He was so damn embarrassed when he gave his dad two hundred bucks the first week, twice. It never happened again.

Whatever dollar amount makes this **** real for you is what you should shoot for but don't make it so high that it is just ridiculous for the other person to accept. That person must take your money for it to work.

I started dipping long cut then went to straight Skoal. Then went to Straight Copenhagen and dipped about ten times per day for about six years. Loved it.<div>
</div><div>Met a great girl (who I eventually married) and she told me I would't be getting any lovin' if I had that crap in my mouth. I quit in about a week never to pick it up again.</div><div>
</div><div>If you can't quit it's not because you can't, it's because you don't want to.</div>

but last year I started working out, paid attention to my diet, high protein, lots of water, etc....my cravings for dipping went away (15 year dipper). So I just quit, for 8 months. Then college football started, life got busier with the kids, work outs dropped off, cravings came back.

I''ve already starteda new routine this year, getting up early(4:10am) and working out.I might as well quit dipping even tho I only dip 1 time every night. My wife has been busting my balls for years.

Put em in your lip where you dip, and you will never want another dip again. On an unrelated topic, if anyone knows of a way to overcome an addiction to wintergreen tic-tacsit would be much appreciated.

There is no one cure all. Everyone is different. For me people telling me to quit, wife, family etc. was the absolutely worst way to get me to quit.

1.With human nature, there is something about being told what you can and can't do. It goes back to teenage rebelling years. You want to do the opposite of what they say.....As adults its a little different but the basic idea is still there.... My wife told me she wanted me to quit. Everytime she saw that I had a can, she would get upset and it upset me, so what did I do....I did what anybody would do...I hid it from her!! I found that after failed attempt after failed attempt, that having a can with me actually helped me quit.....When I didnt have a can, I wanted a dip so bad. but when I had one in my pocket....I knew it was there...I was more apt to turn it down...I know it sounds strange but it helped me.

2. Dont tell yourself that you can NEVER have another dip....and dont consider it a failure if you go a week without a dip, then you get a can.....Concentrate on the week without one. Always know that you can get one when you want it.,....Heck I even celebrated milestones with a dip!!!! .Just set another goal and go after it.....Again sounds strange but one day I found that I had gone a month without a dip....Now I am up to 8 months but I still know that If I want one, I can go get it..

Wish you well....

...this is precisely the way I quit smoking cold turkey, except I had about a dozen close friends who I bet $100 each I would never pick up another cigarette. I told them I would pay them each $100 if they ever caught me smoking. That was March 1, 1975. I have never smoked a single cigarette since then. It backs you into both a financial and moral corner. You can't betray your word, nor can you afford to pay out $1200 just for a cancer stick.
