Anyone else watching this? It has been kind of strange but I think is about to kick it up a notch. Definitely an odd concept. The cast is good though and have liked Peter Berg's previous stuff. Anyone else?

I started watching it as well - weird, but in a good way. It is based off of a book, so I have added it to my read list too.

I didn't make it through the first episode...

Does it pick up or are 3 episodes so far as gloomy and depressing as the first 20 min?

Tom Perrotta wrote the book on which it's based-- fantastic book, by the way. The movies 'Election' and 'Little Children' are also based on other books by him.

I'm still sticking with it. Last night's episode was good. I was expecting it to be like The Returned, which it isn't at all. If you haven't watched The Returned on Netflix then that should be your next one. It's an excellent French series.

The second episode is not quite as depressing but it's still weird. I'm going to give it one more episode and if I don't know what the 17 is going on after that, I'm going to look for spoilers online. If all it is is exploring the reaction of people when 2% of the population disappears, without any explanation of what the disappearance was caused by, then I'll drop it.

It has received reviews all over the board. I fall into the category who thinks it's fairly boring, but I will continue to watch it because it's the middle of summer and this is when there are zero new shows.

One observation I didn't catch until I read it on twitter was how the director zooms in on people's faces while they eat. It's really strange.

Could barely make it though the first episode

I had high hopes for that show, love quality dramas, and liked the concept, but my god was that slow and depressing.

I've been watching, and I'm still not quite sure what to think

It's definitely not one that I would say is one of the better dramas I've seen lately but at the same time, when I start watching it, it's hard for me to quit. I just have absolutely no idea as to where it's going.

Now, I'll tell you a new show that's been pretty intense so far. Tyrant on FX

I've been wanting to watch tyrant. I'm gonna check it out when I get back from vacation.

Regarding the leftovers, only 2% of the population left. Yet it seems like every single family lost somebody in that town. I stead if 2/100 being gone it makes it seem like 2/10 are missing, maybe more. That's my big gripe really. I'm going to watch the entire season before I write it off, although if the season ended today I wouldn't continue it next year.

I've been watching it and I like it so far. The tension is really building up. Something is about to break.

If any of you like good quality drama's then I recommend "Rectify" on Sundance.

I noticed the same thing. But it sort of makes sense that the show would focus on people who lost close ones. And what I guess is the main character didn't lose anybody to the disappearances, so it's not like everybody on the show lost somebody. But it the opening scene definitely made it seem like it was more like 20%. If 2% of the population disappeared, very few people would have even noticed the disappearance when it happened outside of busy metropolitan areas.

Salmon Rushdie
Shaquille O’Neal
Jennifer Lopez
Anthony Bourdain
Bonnie Raitt
Pope Benedict XVI
And Gary Busey...

“The Pope, I get the Pope, but Gary f*cking Busey?!” Lindelof’s response was simply, ”The Lord works in strange ways.”

I know I'm breaking a rule by bringing this one back to the front page, but did any of you catch the third episode about the priest? It was incredible.

Just thought it was funny that we were talking about not being able to get a feel for this show a little over a week ago, and then they put out an absolute masterpiece in episode 3. One of the best single hours of tv I've seen in awhile

YES! That was an intense of a moment as you could have. This show seems to be 'toying' with us a little bit. I am definitely sticking with it. The past 2 episodes are great TV. I believe that some of the things that we haven't not been let in on yet (who the people were, what the hell the animals have to do with things) are going to be riveting. Also, I kind of really like the twin boy idiots.

The look on the priest's face at the end was priceless **spoilers below** , and then adding that new Take Me to Church song when the credits rolled was perfection as well. I wonder if that story is going to end up being nothing more than a one off sidebar or if more will develop from it. You know that he had to completely flip when he had been pretty much the only one in town stopping to help the cult people every now and then, but then he comes to find out that they were the ones that bought his church out from under him.

Is it just me or is this the first series in a long time that has had somewhat of a "LOST" feel to it? Granted, the stories are night and day, but it's the first one I can recall since LOST where much of it is intriguing, but you just don't have clue what in the world is going on. Then, it was very LOST-like to do that masterful one off episode like they just did that really didn't seem to have a ton to do with the main plot. Whatever the case, if I wasn't hooked before, I am now.

I thought that the pilot episode of The Strain was excellent. Just watched the second one last night, though, and it took a pretty steep dive in my opinion. Hopefully, that was just a case of the usual post-premiere letdown and it will come back strong throughout the rest of the season, but these shows don't get much time to maintain ratings these days. They'll need to pick it back up quickly.

Agree completely. And, I didn't watch Lost but every person I know that did and watches this is saying the same thing. Intriguing is a great word for this show. The music at the credits is a great nugget on each episode.

Side note on the preacher. My wife told me this. He is Nicole Kidman's husband from "The Others". Poor man just cannot get a light storyline, can he? I think he is a hell of an actor though. The casino scene was great. My wife literally fast forwarded the scene in the car because it was too tense for her.

There's a good reason for the similar feel of the series...Damon Lindelof is the showrunner and creator of The Leftovers. He was also the showrunner of Lost.

The pilot was almost 2 hours so they got to do more with it. I don't even like vampire-themed stuff but I have a good feeling about it.
