You want to know how the economy is doing, look at paper shipments. Forget govt numbers as those can and will be manipulated. See how paper shipments are doing, Are they up? Less growth than expected? Or are they down.

Soecifically Kraft paper, it’s used to make shipping cartons. If Kraft paper sales are up, you can bet your *** something was put in those boxes. Somebody had to make something or harvest something for them to need a box.

China put some sort of high fees on shipping container usage (which they own the most of) and it pissed Trump off and he responded with a 100% tariff plus is now threatening to not meet with President Xi in the coming weeks as previously planned. BTW, China owns and controls several major ports in the U.S. and look to buy and dominate more. I think they own major interests in Miami, LA, Seattle, and some on the East Coast. We keep letting them accumulate U.S. assets and farm land, then we all better learn Mandarin Chinese in the near future. They are on steroids to replace the U.S. as THE global power.

I was wondering what was going on today. I lost quite a bit in my 401k.
Profit taking from the big spike a few days ago. Plus, the day traders 17 everything up for us long term investors. We ride the big waves, while they like to keep the waters choppy and difficult to manage.

Any idea why?
Come on, that is absolutely obvious. This rare earth stuff is for real, and is the REAL trump card. It’s a fight we absolutely have to pick, but not until we are capable of winning it. Given time we ARE capable of winning it. Right now we are courting the collapse of everything that runs our world by doing so. It’s BEYOND stupid to do it now.

Ukraine has an abundance of rare earth needing to be mined. Trump has already secured commitments from Zelensky to provide us with rare earth in exchange for our help with Russia and with us providing the equipment and expertise to extract it.

We can't do that until the war is ended. Not confronting and putting pressure on China, who is helping Putin stay in the fight is not gonna work. Besides, China's economy needs us WAY more than we need them. Yes, they can hurt us, but we can hurt them more.

Ukraine is too damn close to Russia rely on long term for this stuff. We have our own, in abundance. We just can’t mine them or refine them due to environmental BS. We are outstanding at mitigating those kind of impacts. We need to recognize that and get on with it.

Also, we absolutely HAVE to have rare earths. China doesn’t absolutely HAVE to have our markets. They are a totalitarian state. If it comes to it, they can let their people starve. This is NOT the time to pick this fight. That time will come if we are smart enough to stand down, buckle down, and prepare for it. What we are doing now is incredibly stupid. It borders on insanity.

Interesting situation, but if the war is ended while Trump is still in office, or if Vance succeeds him, the idea would be that Putin would not be able to invade Ukraine without risking US casualties. At a minimum, we would likely have a small force there to protect the US companies, but also to serve as a deterrent for Russia, as an attack then could be an attack on us as well.

Trump or Vance would have an excuse to use US force if that happened, and Putin knows it.

Standing down now is not much of an option because China just keeps getting stronger, keeps stealing our technology, ignoring our patents, etc. And though China doesn't give much of a damn about the lives of their people, if the4y push them too far, Ping might have a revolt on his hands.

There was a time when it was thought the people of Russia could never challenge the power of the Czars. What happens if the families of China's armed forces start to see their families begin to starve, face hardships, etc.?

Do you have any idea how much money China has been investing in their armed forces? It's scary. Waiting only lets them get more powerful.

If they cut off rare earths our world grinds to a halt. We can't even build advanced military equipment. They hold all the cards for now. Pushing this now is insane. In a decade if we could stay on point it wouldn't matter. Trump can't wait for some reason. This alone if he presses it confirms he is not fit to be the leader of the free world. China can withstand hardship for their people because they could care less. This is the regime that was welding apartment buildings shut during COVID.

Oh brother...,here we go again. Another "he's not fit to be the leader of the free world"-er. 8 wars stopped in 7 months and he still can't get even a compliment from the vast majority of libs.

Your guy was an utter abomination as President...a joke...a laughing stock internationally. We are WAY better off with Trump, and it's not even close.

20 million open positions and at least 25 million working age, healthy people who have affirmatively opted out of the work force.
this can’t be true. All Americans want to work and chase the American dream but the opportunities just aren’t there **

Non farm job openings are still about a million higher than the 25 year median. And the unemployment rate is below the 50 year average. Strangley enough California has the highest unemployment rate in the country but it's only 5.5%.

This market is way over extended. PE ratios need to be brought back below 20.
Honestly that’s why I like the market right now

slow steady growth with a few ups and downs for about 12 to 18 months is good

nothing to drastic to hurt but slow enough growth to let things balance out

Actually probably the best time to tell our enemies in economics and international business to get 17ed

Well, they are people who buy things and contribute to the economy when they are gainfully employed. I’m not seeing the benefit of kneejerk layoffs due strictly to the government shut down. Seems like no good can really come from that.
I mean if you get less dumb regulations you get more growth.

more growth creates jobs for those people who lost them.

examples of dumb government crap I’ve experienced in last 3 weeks

camper title in Mississippi I bought at an auction without a title

talked to 6 different people 3 different times and 18 different answers. It can’t be that 17ing complicated

trying to get a used vehicle dealer license so I can go to auctions. That’s revenue for the state in multiple ways.
1. I pay fees to get license and sales tax permit
2. I buy liability insurance
3. Have to rent a place in a small town that would never be rented bc I have to have a place of business
4. Sales tax on all cars sold

it’s taken me 4 months to get to where I am now. I can probably have my license by 2nd week of November

Don’t believe me?

just try to get a dealers license for $h1ts and giggles

💯%! Knowing when to get out is easy, knowing when to get back in is the hard part. I had gotten out of the market ahead of the 2008 crash, but got back in too early and ended up down (not as down as most, but still down a significant amount).

I did the same thing in late Dec 2021, it was obvious the start of 2022 was going to be rocky so is sold late in
Dec, I timed my reentry better that time though.
Explain this to me

if you got out at say 100 points and got back in at 80 points you made money

even if it dropped further you still made more money

Hell yeah, brother. Let's cut the **** out of some DoD jobs. Largest driver of personnel expense gets hit first.
Nah let’s cut more places like USAID first

but I’m 100% on board with a legit audit of all government agencies

But DoD actually benefits all Americans whether you think so or not.

It has nothing to do with Trump. And Biden was NOT My guy. I never voted for the idiot, and I formed that opinion of him DECADES before he was President. I remember a respected press hounding him out of a presidential race for plagerism.

It has everything to do with we absolutely have to have rare earth minerals to exist as a modern technological society. We have enough of our own, but we aren’t mining or processing them here. Until we do, and it will take a while, but it VAN be done, endangering our supply of them is just plan out insane. We are picking this fight a few years too soon. It needs to be picked…when we can win.

Better off cutting here than cutting US AID. Soft power really does matter. Abandoning that field to China is insane.

Heyyyy now you have nuance. Welcome to adult conversation! I do think DoD benefits us. Probably can scale back/eliminate many things. Same comment for USAID. Bloat is a disease that infects any publicly funded agency and we have a political system not set up to snuff it out.

Probably some truth to both when you dig into those comments.
