I am going to Pataya, Thailand for 3 weeks next month. Do you have any recommendations as far as sight seeing or eating on the weekends? Saw a beach in Koh Mak that looked really nice. Trying to avoid the "Hangover" Thailand.. Thanks for any recs you can give.

Timing could be better, but I will get to see the Southern Miss game and be back in time for Auburn.

An expat living there that I was talking to in an airport said that the islands are great (which ones I don't know) and Thailand gives you the best experience for the money.

Keep us up to date on what you find because I'd like to go next summer.

Pataya is every bit as crazy as Bangkok, and everything you've heard about Bangkok is true. Hands down the craziest places I've ever been. A few tips:

1. Take a boat out to one of the beach islands, but make sure you go to the bathroom before you go out. There is no plumbing, and you literally use the bathroom in a stall with a shallow hole dug in the ground.

2. Don't lead the "bar girls" on. As in, if you spend more than five minutes with them they expect you to take them back to your hotel and pay them for their services. They get kind of ticked off when you don't. If you are going with any girls who happen to be of Asian decent, they will be hit on by a-hole Russians who think that all Thai girls are prostitutes.

3. The Sanctuary of Truth is pretty cool.

It's been a while since I've been, and we spent most of our time in Bangkok. I think I spent two nights in Pattaya. It's an easy and cheap bus ride.

Try to contact Sitalarp Vasuvat...got his advanced degrees at MSU in early '60 in agronomy/seed technology.... googled him not long ago and saw where he was being recognized by Thai government upon his retirement... a really fun person when he was at MSU.... wanted to go to Madi Gras so some of my friends accommodated him... think he had a blast.

Spent my 23rd birthday there, compliments of the US Navy. That was a long time ago, but here's what I remember"

1. The word "Tan" = "Coca-Cola." This can create confusion on the beach.

2. The local parlance for transsexual is "Benny Boy." If you want a free glimpse of cooter, accuse a working girl of being a Benny Boy. They get highly offended by this and will present you with visual proof that they are indeed a natural female.

3. Go to the Tiger Bar if it's still there. You will see performances that not only put Tijuana to shame, but may haunt your dreams for years.

4. DO NOT get drunk, ten feet tall, and bulletproof and get into the ring with a kick boxer.

5. Be very careful about playing Connect Four (yes, the kid's game) with the bar girls for beers. You cannot win and will lose a lot of money.
