Pretty standard career track, PhD, postdoc (Institute of Advanced Study, Harvard), tenure track position. He’s worked very hard, good for him. College mathematics professor, that’s a great gig.

Whew. For a while, I thought he was gonna enter the portal for a better postdoc NIL deal. Just goes to show you never stop recruiting your own faculty.

LionJam-Thanks for the info-Urschel is clearly one of my favorite Penn Staters. I am sure it is "easy" to get a tenure track position at MIT. They sure attract top talent there. Congratulations to John-he sure has worked hard for many years to get Ph.D. and beyond!! He is good friends still with our TE coach!!! Hope he can attend a game-MA is not that far!!
A little insight here on tenure track in the math department at MIT: My nephew was in the math department at MIT for four or five years on the same track It is a seven year process. The greatest demand is in finding sponsors for research, as these tenure track profs are essentially funding their position after the first couple of years. Nothing is guaranteed. He left for a much more secure position at Vandy, where I believe he was given tenured status as part of the inducement to leave MIT. Less prestige. Much more security.
Now Urschel gets to rub shoulders with the great Gerald Lambeau.
Yeah, nothing is guaranteed for those who are not tenured. Worst case scenario for Urschel is probably along the lines of what your nephew encountered.
Urschel is already rubbing shoulders with the great Curtis McMullen, who, incidentally enough, does look like Gerald Lambeau.

I would freak out if he was my kids proff at NU! She will be there in July. She will be the starting FH keeper for the 2025 season.
