Surf by there one day and its outlaw country. The next is classic rock. One day it was 1920's soap opera radio.

Its like somebody is playing XM Radio roulette with the format.

But to answer the OP's question...Jackson is a piss poor media market. Small population. Small median income.

I have a hard time paying for radio. I'm not a huge music guy but when I want to listen I want to hear what like.

If you are in to alt rock or even hard rock and metal its very worth it because there are just not many stations around that play that music anymore. Like in Memphis its pop, R&B/rap, or classic rock/oldies. There is one classic station that does play harder rock but its like Nickelback every other song.

Bad quality. Different kind of bad than AM, but bad. The bit rates are worse than a cell phone call. Single digits kbps. Decent mp3's are 192 to 256 kbps. Sirius = single digit kbps.

I've listened to XM too, and it sounds better than Sirius. But both of them are inferior to plain FM radio. I don't have to have CD-quality sound from sat radio, but I can't stand listening to stuff that sounds like ****.

Jackson radio was bad in the early 2000's, now it's atrocious. Z 106 plays the same track selection that it did in the late 90's. I didn't realize had bad it was until I moved away. Now with satellite radio and personal media taking over, I think music radio stations will continue to decline in smaller markets.

Rock 103 in Memphis used to be good, but they are now more like an AM station from the seventies, with station tags between every song. Unfortunately the demographics are not good, as too many people like country, soul or simply listen to reich wing talk radio. Also have XM Radio, which is good when you are out in the boonies .

You have to get a stronger fm reciever installed to fix that problem, and then there's no guarantee. From my experience satellite is only clear if it comes with the factory radio deck.

Z106.7 is ok at times, but they play crap like Cheap Trick and RATT. But by far the worse one is Y101....absolutely gay!! I would rather listen to SuperTalk all day long than listen to Adelle 10 times in one day.

I hate modern popular music! How much of that stuff will be remembered 5 years from now? Music died with the original mtv, long ago.

Yes, satellite radio sounds like **** if you are streaming it to your radio with an FM modulator. If you have it built-in or have it hardwired into your head unit it is superior thanterrestrialradio. The same mouth breathers that use the FM modulators are the same people who used the tapeadapterto listen to cds in their car. As for mp3's, anything over 160 kbps is wasted bandwidth and storage space. Most people can'tdistinguishbetween a 160 and a 256 kbps mp3 on their car radio.

It is variable between 120-380 kbps but they actually don't measure it that way, those are just the equivalents. They measure it in something called PAC. Even at 120 that is still better than FM sound which is usually in the mid 60's. The only way that Satellite radio sounds poor is when you have it playing through an FM Modulator or a crappy system. Most people hard wire them in or simply use their "Aux" input and it sounds very good.

Think you might want to check how you are listening because what you are saying is not correct.

If you think music radio is bad, don't flip it over to sports talk. You can only listen to so much of ESPN talking heads speculating on where Dwight Howard and Darren Williams will end up in NBA free agency.

The caveat being I always lose it for a second when I go under an overpass, and San Antonio has overpasses everywhere..

it was all I listened to. More of a new rock and some alternative. Move away to a larger market and come back and you really realize how pathetic it is.

that is not what Flab was saying. He was saying that the quality was on par with AM radio which is just not right.

I have an xm roady that I put in different vehicles and doesn't sound as good but it's a plug and play but it doesn't sound like am radio. That's a bit of an exaggeration but it's still better than listen to the awful fm stations around here.

I refused to believe it was happening and stayed up to listen. So do you know the answer to this tragic trivia question?

There are no commericials too. They will play some classic rock, but they play more of the stuff that Z106 doesn't play. Instead of a hair band, you might get some Allman Brothers. And instead of one of their top 5 songs that's been on repeat on Z106, it might not be one that hasn't been overplayed and it might be a live performance from '78 or something. But you never know what is on there. They always play Joss Stone. There might be some old school R&B one second and bluegrass the next. I dont like it all the time but it's definitely the closest thing we have to not listening to the same old **** over and over. It's like z106 on sundays with more variety.

ETA: the last business day was July 2, 1981. True enough the last song was played after midnight...around 2am (The Doors "This is the End"). Warren Strain was on the air for the final goodbye.

Then at 5am the same morning Smilin' Bob Rall was all "hee and haws" to launch MISS 103. July 3rd, 2012.

Z106, a couple of decent-ish country stations, and batshit crazy local talk radio--that's enough for me. But I'm only there a few weeks out of the year. Maybe it's just nostalgia.

Every now and then I'll jump to another channel when I get an artist alert, but otherwise I stay on those two.
