A lot has been made of Russia's anti-gay law. Last night, NBC was talking about it in a segment, then one of the commentators on the men's figure skating was talking about how men's figure skating was one of Russia's favorite sports. Something doesn't add up.

It reminded me of a story. I had some small behind the scenes duties with the International Ballet Competition the last time it was in Jackson. We had dinner with one of the Russian PR guys, who spoke perfect English. He would tell us of escapades by this ballet guys that would make NBA players jealous. He said a world class male ballet dancer or male figure skater could have any woman he wanted in Russia, and they could not believe that in America, there was a homosexual stereotype.

Basically, these Russian figure skaters are slaying more tail than any of us. And they can't believe that our culture sees them as feminine.

That's the case only in former Soviet countries where homosexuality was outlawed. A Olympic athlete from the western block was like a doctor/lawyer/engineer all wrapped into one. They had all the funds of the Supreme Soviet behind them and could get any woman they wanted. In the free world every nancy boy that liked to smoke pole and couldn't compete in man-sport took up ballet and figure skating.

If the Russian guy from last night isn't gay, then I don't know what to tell you. He's the only one of the lot wearing a unitard.

He didn't get this outfit from the mens department...

/Not that there is anything wrong with that.
//Just crazy considering Russian intolerance to gays.

That's the point. They don't see unitards as gay!

In Russia, hockey is very popular. But then these smaller Olympic sports are on par with our NFL/NBA/MLB. The Soviets took up basketball only to beat us in our own game during the Cold War. Its really not that popular anymore.

A lot is being made of the law by the media but from the little bit I've read the only real law is an anti-propaganda law that relates to distribution of the stuff to children (not sure what age limit that really affects). So seems like a mostly harmless law that is getting blown up.

It's sort of like Middle Easterners expecting dudes to hold hands. It's just how it's done in that culture.
