I guess colour/color would be another one. I'm satisfied with just getting it. I think a little luck in early guesses is necessary to get it in 3 tries or less.

The article said rebus and tapir were earlier words used. See now that's where Google comes in lol. From when I've started playing, I haven't seen any "wacko" words like that.

This was today's solve for me. The clue in the image is that I did not use the letter I found in the correct position in my second guess. In doing so, that eliminated 8 letters and provided 2.. one in correct position. For the third guess I pretty much knew the first three letters. Guesses 3 and 4 were common words... that eliminated 4 more letters. Only 11 letters remained unused, untested. And as far as I could tell, the only 5 letter word remaining was the answer... and it took a while to figure that out.

I have read other of your responses where you mention the overall strategy of eliminating letters while finding others. Revealing such strategies prevents others from finding that strategy on their own which could be a similar "win" for them as guessing the right words to use. When someone mentions a word to use at the start for a particular puzzle.. they take away other players' sense of discovery.

I suppose that could be true but if someone is playing the game daily I'm guessing they come across these strategies etc.. in the twitterverse/internet more than discovering them on their own. What you say is possible but I think more often than not, people will be like "that's a good idea/strategy, let me try that" rather than "man I wanted to discover that idea/strategy myself"

Played first time today - friend bugged me to try knowing I play other word games. Got it last try, but not all that interested in getting into the habit

I got today’s on the third guess. First word raise, second a little help from Google to pick a good one and then got it on third guess on my own.

Jumble is a favorite in our office. Don't see the attraction of Wordle, but different things appeal to different people.

I actually guessed the less obvious one first thinking they might go that way.. and don't forget that the OP mentioned a solution with a double letter.. which had not occurred to him.

My friend starts with that...l like "rates," as it gets a higher percentage of commonly used letters in the English language (d and u aren't that great). How lucky you get with the first guess is so important.

exact same thing on shore, then shire, but having read The Hobbit, shire was obvious...

went with a random 5 letter word to start.. more challenging.. went with ***** then for second word did not repeat any letters... another randomish word. 3rd word did not reuse any letters either.. having gotten little help in the first two. With this I may one day guess the first word but if I use a common opening I will likely solve it with fewer guesses each day.. and go through the same logic after first guess each day. Think I'll keep mixing up first guess.

Same for me. 5th guess and probably the longest I've needed to solve one on the website.

There's also an app in the app store call "wordus" that's the same game. I downloaded that so I can play more than 1 round if I feel like it.

Same! I had the first 3 and knew one of the last 2 letters... you'd think knowing 4 letters would be easy but classic over thinking

That pattern is similar to mine yesterday and usually how I use up guesses. KNACK, ABACK, WHACK...I haven't missed on the website yet but I've missed 2 in the app in that manner. You run through similar words and you need a little luck to land on the right one.

Hard mode is harder (but still not hard.. yet).. especially starting with a random-ish word (though I'll never choose one that repeats a letter as the first word, I have used words with less frequently used letters like W, Q, K). Hard mode means once you uncover a letter you have to reuse it in next word.
