Davis has had a relatively minor knee injury. Why chance it against a guy of Ayala's quality.
Caliendo's style is a very poor matchup against Mesenbrink. KOT or Carr or Hamiti would be a different match, as we saw last year. A great counter wrestler can competitively get to the third period against Mesenbrink. Of course none of them are at 165 this year.
That would be a very good investment for OSU wrestling.
For many reasons, it’s not likely to happen.
Mainly soccer, football and baseball being HUGE in that state.
If you could get something like M2 or AWA set up in Frisco area it would produce. Doesn't have to be huge but give somewhere for the studs to group up and start training. Sports in North Dallas area are absurd.

The amount of athleticism that would transition to Wrestling (other sports attrition) and the number of kids that leave those sports could generate some serious Wrestling.

Theres no major club/academy. It's high school rooms only. The athletes are here, just need a room and a few coaches with the right name IMO.
I’d love to say build it up in Houston, but north Texas makes the most sense to start. So many kids that you don’t need to be as big as football, just capture like 2% and it’ll take off. Go after kids who are great athletes but too small to be true top end football or basketball talent.
I mean honestly I think even with the kids right now already committed to wrestling, just giving them better development will make a huge step up. Then you start to see more interest after that.

Great article following up with Jordan Williams and how he’s seeming to get it put together at UALR. Mixed feelings reading it because it kinda comes across that he was a kid who desperately needed guidance and he just didn’t get it last year.
I know it’s not a coach’s jobs to babysit their guys every waking minute, but I do know a lot of wrestlers liked to party both in and out of season during my time at OSU. And some of them were pretty mean drunks.

I could be way off but I think Jordan got plenty of chances. I'm a big fan of the kid and hope he thrives.
Yeah, over the last few years that stuff was turned a blind eye too and may have even been encouraged by some of the leaders of the team. When DT came on, he had to put an end to it quickly. I am glad that Jordan is doing good because that shows he learned from his decisions.
Great article. I hope Jordan's story has a similar ending to Chance's story, which also ended in a small town. Sometimes the pressure to "fit in" as a prominent athlete puts a toll on kids. I certainly was young and dumb, but I wasn't under a microscope either.
I think Little Rock is also 4 hours from Tulsa/Owasso, whereas Stillwater is an hour at most. Sometimes getting away from home (and maybe bad influences from your hometown) are exactly what a kid needs.
I remember stories about wrestlers crashing fraternity parties and doing things basically daring the hosts to ask them to leave/kick them out, and then proceeding to (unsurprisingly) beat the crap out of anyone and everyone who stepped to them.

I was in school in the late 90’s and that was never the case. I was actually pretty impressed with the focus a lot of them had.
Not sure when/why it changed but I can tell you that wasn’t the case for guys in the 2010’s. At least not all of them.
A lot of people on here may not like this response, but it changed when Coach Smith let it change. He could have put an end to it immediately, but he allowed it to linger around and spread. Smith did a lot of great things for OK State wrestling, no one can take that away from him, but he did lose control of the team towards the end.
When I was in school there were stories of Lee Roy and Eric Wais kickin' a few asses around town. I never witnessed it but talked to those who said as much.
John was an old school can he win type of guy. Things were different years ago. As guys starting wrestling 11 months a year lifestyle became way more important. If you lived a party lifestyle outside the room and still won not much was said.
I think that’s pretty undeniable. Like most champions, it’s hard to let go and get out when they are on top. They always feel that there is a silver bullet that will get them back to their former glory.
Just read an article on FB about Jax and Bo not going to Penn State. Anyone else tired of Starocci always having something to say when people don't choose Penn State? Instead of wishing someone the best with their opportunity, he takes a shot at them. His quote in this article I read (his tweet) shows he is a hypocrite, considering what he was quoted saying back in August. 1.3 million for Starocci to return this year. Maybe he should take his own advice to others about not speaking about his pockets.

No but he fired shots at DT when he took the OK State coaching job. And he is still a hypocrite no matter who it was directed at.

Carter is an extremely talented wrestler. He is also a cocky loud mouth who can’t help himself at times.

I bet that some of the Penn State wrestlers have NIL deals that pay very good. I feel like they are just better at keeping it quiet. If Starocci got 1.3 million for this year, that would make him probably the highest paid wrestler in the NCAA. If I remember correctly RBY was one of the first to take advantage of the NIL, and was one of the highest paid.
Whether we like it or not, the NIL is part of college sports now. For anyone to expect these kids to not take advantage of it, is just crazy. For anyone that does take advantage of it and then tries to shame someone else for doing the same thing, is even crazier and a hypocrite.
It’s almost like they signed contracts with gag orders…which, seems to be commonplace.
If I were to give a kid a deal and I’ve already contributed to another guy, I’d sure be diligent to make sure I was asked for more money by the first guy.
In a college setting, with teammates, a gag order would have to be in the contract.
