Our Defense....the elephant in the room?

As the season draws closer and closer, I think we all feel comfortably sure that we are going to score more points than last year. I mean, is there really any doubt about this? No, we might not light the world on fire in our first season in the scheme, but look at what we are comparing it to...complete dog shat for the last 5 + seasons. So that is all good....NOW

To me the silence about what Torbush will make of this defense is deafening. Nobody is talking about it. I dont think anyone was blown away by the Torbush hire, but we have been so mesmerized by our shiny new offense that we haven't given much thought to the boom or bust our defense will be this season. I am extremely nervous.

Our entire secondary is really an unknown element. I dont think there are any playmakers in that unit. Mitchell and Smith will be steady, I believe, and Mitchell may burst onto the scene this year as a star, but you certainly can't count on that. The corners definitely will not be lock down, but could be serviceable.

I don't have anything to complain about with the LB crew, just pray nobody gets injured.

DL...hopefully McPhee is enough of a force to take pressure off of the rest of the line. He is going to get double teamed a lot. Will be a long season for him unless Love turns into a Gilbert Brown-type space eater. I have no clue if we will have a bonifide edge-rusher emerge this year. There certainly are some possibilities. Good to hear about Cox and Boyd doing well this summer too. I think David Turner is a clown (I dont have any real reason for that, just dont like him. I miss Brick). I hope he proves me wrong.

I think our talent is almost good enough for our defense to be as good as it was last year, if that makes sense. It really will just depend on how Torbush runs it. Is A&M the only egg that Torbush laid as a DC? Why does that gig burn into my memory so? I know he had good defenses at Ole Miss, UNC, and Bama. Anyone else see reason for concern?

With our schedule, I am not counting on a heap of wins, but I am counting on some damn good games and some promise....and MAYBE a 6 win season. The key to that will be whether Torbush and Co. can put a traditional State Defense out there (late Jackie years aside). IF we have our usual salty D and score more points, it could be an exciting season. Sounds simple, because it should be.

The d-line has Mcphee playing out of position and then 3 other guys. People are dying to pretend that Love is really good, but he's just not.

Our secondary is both inexperienced and bad.

Our Linebackers are good but are going to have to overacheive.

I'm afraid of "deep threats" when I think about our defense. I think the teams that have the arm and wrs to catch the long ball can burn us really bad.

I have been thinking the same thing. He obviously did pretty well at UNC but I wasn't all that impressed with A&M

From an article about him being fired......
"During his time at A&M however, the once heralded Aggie "Wrecking Crew" defense struggled, producing numbers that steadily declined. Heading into last week's game against arch-rival Texas, A&M's defense was ranked 109th in the country, allowing a national worst 319 passing yards per game.

Texas A&M lost the last four games of the season and finished the year with a disappointing 5-6 record."

opposite KJ Wright. McPhee is a prototype 3-4 end. Put Love in the middle and find someone to play the other side, whether it be Boyd, Cox, Burns or whoever.

If the line can muster any kind of pass rush, it has the ability to take the heat off a less then stellar secondary. That being said, I think we have more depth than last year up front (quality???). Last year we had Tim Bailey playing at one end spot. He gave it his all, but everyone new he was LB who was moved to end.

It's better for a D to be soft against the pass than the run IMO.

There are alot of things that have to go right to gain yards through the air.

However, we play some pretty solid QBs this year (Tebow, Snead, kid from Ark). They might light us up, but I'll take my chances on that rather than having a D that gets blown off the line every snap.

after he simulated a whole season with mcphee we ended up with the 82 best defense in the country, and without mcphee we were the 83 best defense. With KJ out we were the 84 best defense...and when he switched our base defense to a 3-4 we were actually the 62 best defense in the nation. I bet he is worn out after simulating 5-6 seasons of NCAA10 all night

Even if Torbush is a bust, I do not believe Mullen will have any qualms about asking him (or telling him) to leave.

I don't think people will realize how much we lost and how little Croom left until this year.
Losing Bowman, Holmes, McRaney, Bailey, Douglas, Pegues, Fitzhugh, and Glanton will really hurt b/c we don't have that many guys ready to step up and take their places.
All of those DL guys were solid, I especially think Bowman was a huge key for us last year. Losing those 4 DL guys will hurt more than anyone realizes, and I think we'll be vulnerable to the run.
