Our lack of power is just killing us

We have to try and hit 4 dinky infield singles in a row to score one run. Our only power hitter is mired in a huge slump and nobody else is capable of anything except slap hitting it over the infield or drag bunting. It's hard to score runs when you have to string 4 hits in a row to do it.

They haven't given us anything. I don't recall more than one walk in an inning, and they haven't made an error.

And we have relied on that all season. A lot of our big innings have included walks and errors by the other team. When teams don't walk us or commit errors, we're not going to score runs because we have to string at least 3 hits together to do it, and that's hard to do.

Fifth in the league in doubles, 4th in slugging percentage, but carry on with your whining.

I think that's just reality of today's college baseball offense. You just aren't going to see many teams roping 2 or 3 doubles and a HR in an inning.

Maybe the most embarrassing issue with our lineup is that we don't have a productive dh. It shouldn't be so hard to come up with a dh with some power

Well the announcers were spot on about the hits in the game.

27 hits in the game between both teams, 25 of which were singles. There aren't going to be many teams in the country that can consistently score runs when they get nothing but singles in a game unless they can steal bases or hit and run. We haven't be able to do either of those with consistent success, but we have been able to manufacture runs off of teams mistakes. We've been the beneficiary of having Renfroe in the middle of the lineup blasting balls until recently and that helped with run production. Beyond him, Rea is really the only true power guy in the lineup, so if teams don't make errors and don't walk us, we just aren't going to score a lot of runs because we are built as a singles, station to station baseball team, which is the way Cohen wants it. I personally don't have a problem with that approach in this era of college baseball.

Obviously it's been pretty successful this year with 41 wins so far, but we need to find us another power bat with Renfroe gone after this year. I don't think Rea can put up the numbers Renfroe did, so we need another bigger bat in the middle. Not sure who that will be next year, but we really need it.

I

think people just do not have a clue how bad these bats are killing college baseball. If you look at the hitting stats, SEC or total, we are near the top of most hitting categories. These new bats 17ing suck.

Anywhere or anyway to find out what our situational hitting stats might be?

I think more than anything that's what hurts us because we get a lot of runners on base and then can't get them in, plus we don't have many guys that can drive the ball.

Power is gone in college baseball. Unless you play at a Cracker Jack park. Or pull a Mercer with fake bats.

I'd love to see a comparison of the average size of a left fielder 10 years ago compared to today.

My biggest gripe is our lack of putting our runners in motion. We don't steal much. Robson stole second last night, but he rarely is on base. We need to hit and run more and put pressure on the pitching and defense. The new bats' perform worse, but our lack of aggressiveness on the base paths is concerning.

Yeah I posted a few weeks ago that a very big event in recent MSU baseball history was Corey Dickerson going pro. He would be huge in this lineup or last years. Would give us another bat/RBI source, and he's probably allow Pirtle to slide back down. Didn't seem like that big of a deal at the time, but he's the missing piece on this years team, IMO.

Well Rea hit a bomb last night that would have been out of pretty much any college park. I do agree that we lack hitters in the lineup with extra base hit capability. Just another reason that Trey Porter should be getting more at bats as DH.

It has more to do with putting together a string of hits than

power. We simply strand too many runners.

We are

third in the league in runs scored, behind LSU and Vandy, so I would say (overall) that scoring runs hasn't been a problem.

I don't know what the scouting report said, but it "seemed" to me that most of our guys were swinging for the fences every at bat. Only guy I saw just put the bat out there and poke one through was Ammirati. Of course those two pitchers pitched out of their mind last night, too.
