2 things I've learned this year:

1. We have some huge idiots in our fanbase.
2. The majority of the posters on this board fall into number 1.

Come on. Use some sense here. Perkins has done it through games as a starter. Milton hasn't been in nearly the downs or even ones that had the game impact.

How does thinking we need to get more reps for a bigger running back that can get more yards after contact makes me an idiot? Does our 5-0 record mean we are a perfect team with zero flaws??

There are several reasons already mentioned why Perkins' performance seems to struggle on short yardage.

1. Our offensive line is not blowing anyone off the line. Malone was pancaked by a DT in the Kentucky game. I am not an OL coach, but that should never happen on a run play where you are supposed to be low and plowing. Reviewing the game footage will show this to be the case. Secondly, Siddoway has not sealed the edge at different times. Everyone was hyped about his JC video, but he is struggling a little against D-I ends. Our line has to get better in order to allow the RB (whatever RB) to power through the line. Furthermore, our OL seems to suck at staying engaged with their target. Don't get me wrong, they are better than last year and getting better this year.

2. Perkins is strong but his running style is a slasher. If you watch the film, he does not generally go down on first contact unless he hasn't gotten going. DL or LBs shooting the gaps get to him just after handoff before he can get going. Any back is going to typically go down then. I think his slashing style is better for the big gain and he is definitely not a power back so why expect him to act like one? We are not a power rushing team anymore. MSU is moving to a finesse type offense under Mullen, especially with TR in there versus a running QB. We may go back when Dak and/or Cord take over the offense in 2014.

3. Running without a FB will give LBs free shots at or behind the line of scrimmage. You can only make them miss so many times. Delayed handoffs actually work better for our style offense.

4. Playcalling. We have unimaginitative playcalling at times. When everyone in the stadium and on TV knows you are going to run the ball, then it is hard to run the ball. We called the same play several times in short yardage situations. We have to improve playcalling if we want to do better. I feel like we get too conservative too early with a lead. That and substituting liberally is what is frustrating most of us with not blowing teams out.

5. Finally, our tight ends are more athletic than previous and are more engaged in the passing game. However, they need improvement in blocking. That extra blocking would help the running game tremendously.

Perkins is by far the best RB on our team, not even close. I agree Milton should be the clear Number 2, but he's not on the same level. I like our system right now with the personnel we have. With improvements in the OL and playcalling we can be a more consistent running team.

Here are the stats:

L. Perkins RB 82 rushes for 499yds/6D 6.1 yds/carry
Derrick Milton RB 22 rushes for 137yds/1TD 6.2 yds/carry

There is no reason that Milton should only get 1 carry against Kentucky. It's hard to say whether or not the other guys are capable of reeling off big plays because they aren't getting enough snaps to make a valid assessment. Perkins explosive runs have come against sub par opponents. My point is that in games where Perkins does not have the athletic advantage to bust big plays I would like to see more of Milton because the numbers and eye test show he is better at getting the tough yards.

Do you realize how bad you contradicted yourself there? If he hasn't gotten enough snaps to make a valid assessment, wtf is the eye test going to prove? My eye test says that he and Perkins are of the same mold with the difference being Perkins' experience. It also says that Robinson runs with malice but isn't too good at finding holes. It also says that Griffin has the size, but like you said, he hasn't had the carries to show what he can do. But let me ask you this, isn't that what practice is for? Is it possible that Mullen and co have seen enough snaps to make a valid assessment and that assessment says that Perkins is the guy?

Waldo, take a step back and let the coaches we pay millions of dollars to decide who plays determine if Milton should play over Perkins. Honestly, as a fan I have pride riding on the game, Dan has 100's of thousands based on winning and losing, he isn't going to put the wrong guy in there in his opinion.

Maybe it is more important that Perkins is in and can be explosive so linebackers have to play more tight to the line and it opens up the passing game where Milton's lumbering allows LB's to drop more easily ... just one of dozens of reasons he is in there

His injury was 2 years ago. He was healthy enough to play last year, and he did quite a few times. It's almost make or break time with him, IMO....

I sort of agree, if he was healthy enough to play last year why is his recovery still in process this year? Heck, I know every injury is different but Lattimore is only 11 months out from his injury in our game last year and he's running like a beast already now. Sometimes I question our surgery quality over there when we have guys like Elliott and now maybe Griffin that can't seem to quite get back to full speed like I see players do at other places.

What a douche move to bump your own post. We lost against a team that 99% of us thought we'd lose before the season started. Great prediction that Perkins would have trouble against Bammer. 17ing asshat.
