Not sure what was going on but I think Memphis averaged 30-40 return yards on each kick.

....We sucked at this last year, too. Braucale can get it to the goal line, but it has virtually no hang time on it. Mullen said that he had a very good camp and was booming the ball, but previous history combined with Saturday night seems to contradict that. We can't give teams the ball at the 35-40 yard line all night (assuming we'll be kicking off frequently).

Yep, seems to be on the kicker.

I vote we kick high and short. Get it to the 20 with lots of hang time. They end up with the ball on the 25 with little chance for breaking a return.

I agree the kickoff coverage was lacking and is a concern.

Here are the stats from the game

KICKOFFS-YARDS 8-495
Average Yards Per Kickoff 61.9
Net Yards Per Kickoff 38.9

So they averaged 23 yards per return.
The longest return was a 32 yarder.

A breakdown of the 8 kickoffs

Sean Brauchle kickoff 69 yards to the UM1, Billy Foster return 30 yards to the UM31
Sean Brauchle kickoff 65 yards to the UM5, Billy Foster return 16 yards to the UM21
D. DePasquale kickoff 58 yards to the UM12, Billy Foster return 32 yards to the UM44
D. DePasquale kickoff 56 yards to the UM14, Gregory Ray return 24 yards to the UM38
Sean Brauchle kickoff 64 yards to the UM6, Billy Foster return 20 yards to the UM26
Sean Brauchle kickoff 60 yards to the UM10, Billy Foster return 27 yards to the UM37
Sean Brauchle kickoff 61 yards to the UM9, Billy Foster return 23 yards to the UM32
Sean Brauchle kickoff 62 yards to the UM8, Billy Foster return 12 yards to the UM20

Brauchle has an average kickoff to 6.5 yard line, returned 21.3 yards and had memphis starting at the 28 yard line.
DePasquale has an average kickoff to 13 yard line, returned 28 yards and had memphis starting at the 41 yard line.

I thought he was supposed to have a really strong leg. He didn't have a touchback at all last year in the games he played and could hardly get the ball past the 10 yard line and had no hangtime on his kickoffs on Saturday. The field goal he missed was embarassingly bad. I think it landed in the corner of the end zone.
